I Got World of Warcraft for Christmas

My daughter got me World of Warcraft for Christmas. I'm a little concerned because I've heard how addictive it is and I have a bit of an addictive personality. I've actually intentionally stayed away from it because of its addictive potential and because of the monthly fees. I loved WC2 and WC3 but this seems a little different. I got extremely bored of Freelancer and someone told me the gameplay is more similar to Freelancer than WC2. 😕

I think I am going to give it a shot though. I'm not sure if I should start now because I'm leaving for vacation on the first, so maybe I should wait until I get back.

I've always been partial to Orcs and I'm thinking about being a Hunter, or possibly a Warrior. I'm also considering Tauren, or maybe Humans. Can I get some input on this?
 
It is not addictive, try it. Roll Horde, far better community (rule of thumb: the prettier the females of a race are, the more kids you have playing that race). You are going to have trouble finding a group as a hunter (so many around).

Maive just launched 14 days or so ago, so you can find people around your level just starting out, it is player versus player, so it will not get boring.

It's a great game from levels 1-60. Very accesible, you can play solo and do lots of quests, and you can group to do instances, which is super duper fun if your partymates are not idiots 🙂

After 60, most people jump ship...the game takes a focus on raiding and PVP. This can be quite fun as well, but it's not for everyone. (and probably that's where the addictive part comes from most...because you need to get increasingly better loot, but you also need to follow raiding schedules and devote considerable lapses of time to the game. And you can't really 'play on your own' any more, as the high end, top tier dungeons necessitate raid parties of at least 20 to be completed).

I say give it a try.

Would being a Warrior make it much easier to find a group?
 
Yes... but the easiest to find a group is priest.

THIS GAME IS ADDICTIVE! if you think you will not get addicted, think again! its so life like and instantly rewarding that you'll end up spending hundreds-thousands hours playing it.

I don't know if I'd say it's "so like life", but one huge aspect is obviously the other people in the game. Once you play for a while, get in a guild and make some WoW-friends you'll find yourself spending a ton of time in the game just talking to them. That's obviously not a bad thing in itself, but when you start doing it first thing in the morning and for ~10hrs straight then something might need to change.
 
I installed the game, watched the nice cinematic, and now I'm downloading a patch for 45 minutes to an hour. This is definitely the longest it's ever taken me to get a game up and running.

I'm leaning towards being a Tauren Warrior right now.
 
Heh me too. My mate brought it around and im thinking "damn this is a double edged sword here" But my plan is to play for the 60 days im allowed with the gamecard and then give up. At the rate im going ill be 40-60 before then and have plenty of time to harass lowbies on the horde side which is all i want to do tbh. I got a pretty addictive personality too, but strong will so i can give up if i choose.

Then i can think to myself "damn that was a fun ride! well back to backstabbing on starcraft 🙂"
 
Yes, the game is addictive and it can get out of hand if you get really involved with the social aspects of helping a guild grow etc. WOW, is a very time consuming game. Wow is not the kind of game you can play and finish it goes on forever giving you that extra incentive to just spend a little more time to accomplish some goal or another. If you have an addictive personality your likely going to end up spending all your free time playing it to the detriment of everything else. I played it addictively for about 8 months then quit. I got back into it and played another 4 months and after one month was addicted again. I have been off it for about six months now and don't plan on going back although a relative and friends that play ask when I am comming back all the time, lol. The game is addictive because of the social aspects not for the individual play which dissapears pretty fast as you get up in level. I suggest you run away very fast and never look back.

Just remember you will be raiding forever the same crap over and over and over and over and over and over at level 60. If your guild sucks (a guild is something you must join or you will not progress in the game) you will raid the same crap even more than forever and ever and ever and ever, lol. Take it from someone that has played and knows the game pretty well. Sell the game on ebay and give your daughter lots of hugs and attention instead and the money back and explain to her you just don't have the time.
 
It can be enjoyed without playing it many hours a day. For every horror story you hear about addiction and the raid treadmill at 60, there's another story about how someone enjoyed the different classes so much and didn't play for hours a day, and so couldn't get a character above 20 or 30. It's what you make of it.

The lower level instances are a ton of fun, and PvP starts to be fun in the 20-29 bracket, more 30-39, for new players (10-19 is loaded with twinks; 60s who've spent a lot of money on their 10-19 character to make them godlike vs. new players). I'd actually recommend alliance for the lower level instances - they have more players, so you can find groups a lot easier, especially if you happen not to be playing during primetime for whatever reason.
 
you have/want a gf/wife ? 🙂 If not..good..play ..otherwise you might have a problem. (assuming she doesnt play too 🙂
 
it's really addictive. I too have an addictive personality and it sucked away a year of my life.

Hope you enjoyed your marriage and a relationship with your daughter.
 
It's not that addictive if you have any self control..

My wife and I have been playing since launch day. and we are still only level 53... we just dont play very often.
 
Its a fun game...DO NOT PLAY ON A PVP SERVER! PVP servers are just a waste of time IMHO... You say you don't want to spend hours doing it - well don't waste your time with the pvp server then. Roll PvE I rerolled PvE because I got sick of being ganked by 60 NE Rogues while trying to quest. PvE has battlegrounds if you want to still get some PVP action - but you can just quest and HAVE FUN normally in the rest of the game.

You can be a warrior so long as you realize your job is to tank, NOT do damage 🙂

Basically...

If you want to take lots of damage, have lots of HP's, and protect the members in your group be a warrior.
If you want to deal damage be a rogue
if you want to deal damage and do more than pressing 1-1-1-2 be a mage 🙂
if you want to heal be a priest (personally i had the most fun as a priest)
if you want to heal...do damage with spells and melee...and offtank be a shaman (very fun, and ghostwolf at 20 makes it easy 🙂)
if you want to heal, do damage with spells...and be very versatile be a druid
if you want to never be invited to groups because nobody understands how good your class really is...be a warlock
If you want to have a lot of fun and easily solo - try rolling a hunter, they're lots of fun, but people tend to not be very good and screw up groups with them.

Bottom line? Have fun with it - its a great game but its even better if you can play with friends.
 
WoW is more addictive than most games -but it really depends on the person.

I'm a gamer, and have played a ton of games throughout my life. None (except for maybe Quake 3) compelled me to play it more than this game. I'm completely over it now and have lost interest -but it took me a year to do so.

But I say give it a shot. There are alot of people out there that casually play the game and enjoy doing so. Just buy a small alarm clock (don't use a mod), set it up in another room (for, maybe 2 hours of play time) and have at it.

If you really want to have a trouble-free grouping character, try rolling a Undead Priest. Play as a shadow priest until about level 55, then respec to holy so you can be more valuable in raids. Besides, if you make it to level 55 you'll most like be in a clan by then and they'll probably ask that you respec to holy for raiding purposes.

Seriously, I've played all races and all classes and my undead priest was the most fun and enjoyable.
 
At first I didn't like any game that had a monthly fee, and that's why there's a free trial period. I was hooked and didn't mind the $15/mo.

About the warrior thing... I started one too... not realizing they are going to be meat-shields, rather than do damage (rogues, few fury warriors). If you're looking for a group, you will be asked to be the meat-shield (aka tank) who's only job is to keep the attention of the mob while others do the damage. I did not like that at all.

- Rogue / Warlock. Doing damage is the funnest. I don't like hunters by default.
 
Leeroy Jenkins Video simply illustrates how much forthought it takes to play WOW when runing instances. Everyone that plays WOW goes through the phase of wanting it to be hack and slash but finding out quickly it requires much patience and planning which for a lot of people is no fun. It turns into quit the game or conform to that style of play with your team and this all plays into the social aspects of the game. The game requires a lot of cooperation between players and a lot of time building social connections that make it very hard to quit the game and abandon those people even though at that same time you are tired of the game, hate the game, want to quit early, have other obligations...
