I bit my tongue while he dribbled on and on about it, what a clown :|

Since my 380 Truepower (mmmm 24A on the 12v) usually runs my 9800 pro perfectly, and i know people running 6800GTs@ultra speeds on them, i wasn't too impressed by this advice 😉

That said, my 9550 is at 9600XT speeds (on an underpowered PSU no less :Q) 😉

9550 is at the verge of needing a fan at all, 9550SE doesn't even need one. Power consumption isn't anywhere near 20 watts.

Ahh, I see you have been blessed by the Idiocy of the Geek Squad as well, *smirk* Hell I used to run one, and I had to tell one of the people they tried to train me with that NO you can't tell a customer they have a 500 Watt in an HP off the shelf so that he could sell him the 200 dollar UPS. *shakes head*

howver, it likes it's fan/ramsinks at faster than 9600XT speeds 😉 Still remarkably cool too (core hasn't gone over 40'C yet gaming).

Some small computer shops guys are idiots. I had one guy tell me my performance would double on my old 9500 Pro if had an 8x AGP slot instead of a 4x. He almost started yelling at me because I said it wasn't true. He then started spouting of benchmark numbers. He also mentioned he got a faster CPU and a 9700 pro on his upgrade.. I wonder why his benchmarks are faster? idiot.

Needless to say I don't go there anymore.

That is like all these people saying that pcie gives such a huge amazing boost on agp cards. Which isn't true either...yet. The difference is nominal and a marketing ploy. If upgrading to a whole new system yeah pcie might make a better choice, but agp is here for a little bit longer. Hell instead of building a new system I've decided to just save up for a 6600GT nvidia agp as I'll get a huge boost over my current 8500 and not have to spend a fortune upgrading a whole pc. My 1800 athlon should be good for at least another year, I just need to up my ram to 1gig then I'll be set for games like BF2, HL2, and Doom3. Then F.E.A.R is coming along with Pariah, etc. All those games are gonna be system hogs no doubt.

Take a look at SPCR's system configurations with power requirements. Even a high end system with top of the line 6 or X8 series video card didn't eat over 200 Watt at load. You are absolutely fine with that 380 TruePower.

Having said that that 9550 even though it is OCed, still (as others have said) barely uses 20... if that.

Edit: At least you bit your tongue. I dont know when to shut up 😛

i agree with the PCI-E argument, simply

you wouldnt upgrade just because of PCI-E, but if you were building a new computer then theres no reason not to buy PCI-E unless you are mega strapped for cash, and if your mega strapped for cash then you shouldn't really be building a pc...you should be buying a $299 dell

I can't believe you expect anything less, I wouldn't go into a computer shop for any reason at any time...ever.

I've been running my 6800U for almost a year off an Antec 350watt True Blue

Maybe we need a thread sticky containg the: "Most Stupid recommendations ever made to you by computer shop asshat techies"

My first thought was biostud's, but if he knew you had a TruePower, then he's just clueless or ruthless. 🙂

I use an old basic 330w Enermax for my media center which consits of a winnie @ 2.43ghz, an x800xt-pe and 2gb of pc-3200, as well as a pair of HDDs, a pair of optical drives and a few other odds and ends that all run nice and stable on my little PS. I'm all for a good solid power supply,. but thinking 400w is needed for a 9550 is just insaine.

As for the term "asshat" it was popularized by JeffK, but it is older than that. It's just slightly less obvious way to say someone has his head up his ass.
