Well i went and bought the 9700 pro, I unistalled the old drivers for the Geforce 3 turned the computer off took the card out put the new card in, started the machine Xp found it and installed the drivers off the cd. Restarted again and it came up fine and i go to start up Unreal 2 and it runs for about 20 seconds and then bam, the monitor goes black but the sound keeps going. Ive tried everytbing I can think of and nothing every game I try does the same thing. I read in other forums about a voltage issue but I cant find anywhere in my bios to change the voltage settings for the AGP bus. Im at work now and I found an asus website a new bios that supposedely fixes a problem with ati cards so Ive downloaded this new bios and I plan on flashing it later on today.

Could it be a power problem?

Im not trying to start any "lame" fights, Idont care about the little flame wars that go back and forth between Nvidia people and ATI, I just want to get my new card which is an ATI 9700 pro working like I thought it would. There is some tweaking that needs to be done, and I accept that but can someone help me do this. And did anyone else have this problem Thanks.

Possible however we could do with more info, does it happen with other games and have you tried both OpenGL and D3D games?

A good cleaner for drivers is Driver Cleaner 1.0(works with both ATi and Nvidia drivers) you can get it from here ,full instructions are in the readme file.

Yes it does it with both I tried Jedi Outcast, C&C Generals and Unreal 2 and they all did the same thing, also when I was just looking around the Internet a error message came on and said something about drivers going down or something to that effect. and it dropped to 640x480 and I had to restart. And if you think it is a power supply what kind would you buy.

Download regcleaner and delete all Nvidia references.

BTW, I think dinde (turkey) was referring to nick's usually unhelpful shot at ATI.

As already stated above, remove all drivers first use Driver Cleaner to clean the drivers out fully,if you still get problems then reformat and then a better PSU from good brands like (Antec,Sparkle,Enermax,Enhance etc) would be your last options.

Too be honest it does sound like a driver problem between your old Nvidia drivers and current ATi ones.

Yep use driver cleaner or similar and remove all nvidia driver stuff. Otherwise format and reinstall.
Nick needs to get a life. Pretty much every ati thread he needs to put it down or say how great nvidia is. Since I have computers with both brands I guess I could bash both ;) hehe

I like the format idea myself also I went from Nvidia to ATI and also had problems till I formatted. The reg cleaners are fine once you get the ATI drivers in and want to try new ones, but when switching things like differnet companies with different drivers formatting is the best way to elimate possible conflicts and start with a clean slate. Doing it that way can cut down on troubleshooting.

I went through the same thing going from Nvidia to ATI. Reformat and proper installation did the trick - unfortunately (I hate reformatting as much as anyone else). Don't know who to blame for that; the OS, Nividia, or ATI, but that's the nature of the beast. Once properly installed, I found my 9700 pro much more satisfying than any Nividia card I had owned before.

I'm talking about fanboy Nick1985.
Format would be the most guaranteed option to get it working right. I had a ti-4400 and installed a 9500pro. Had to format the drive to get it stable. Even though I had ran one of the driver cleaner programs. So try driver cleaner and if that doesn't help then you'll need to format

Well I went and bought a antec truepower 430 watt power supply last night, and installed it I checked to see if that was it, and it still didnt work, so I formatted reinstalled everything tried to start a couple games and it did the same thing. I put back in the geforce 3 and everything is fine now. Do you think its possible that the card is bad Im going to take it back today but I dont know if I should get another one or what.

Could be a faulty card, you tried it in another PC?

You have tried most options so the final stage would be to try the suggestion above and then get a new replacement model.

Welcome to the club. I just sent in an rma request to ATI tonight. I gave them a CC# so hopefully, they'll ship me a newer version in a couple of days.
I have been fighting this damn 9700 pro since December. I've had nothing but problems with it so far. I've had the problem you describe, plus many others.
If this new one doesn't work, it's back to Nvidia for me.

edited for spelling

I see reformatting as a last ditch effort. When I recieved my 9700 pro, I just removed everything that was nvidia including going into the registry and deleting everything nvidia. I probably should have used reg cleaner, but I didn't have it at the time. Oh Well. I then installed the 9700 pro and the latest CAT drivers at the time and I haven't had any problems at all. I did later find one nvidia file that I missed and then deleted it.
I've always installed new video cards without reformatting my hard drive. Never had a problem because of it yet. If I do then I can always reformatt. I even upgraded my motherboard without reformatting once, and it ran great. It just depends on how much of a hassle you find it to reformatt.

the motherboard swap can be tricky if you swich chipset manfuatures, but videocards are cake. you can acutaly just deleate the enum section of the reg and windows will detect all the hardware over again on boot.

Yeah, the chipsets were both VIA chipsets. I was going from the KT133A to the KT266A. But I was also going from a Highpoint raid controller to a Promise controller. I wasn't running any RAID configuration. All I did was uninstall the Highpoint drivers if I remember right. Then swapped the motherboards, and installed any software that came with the new motherboard.
