Reason why to never self-diagnose:

1. One night, right gland feeling kind of swolen, thought I had a cold something coming on, no big deal. I also felt this sort of pain on the bridge of my nose, thought nothing of it- inside pimple or something...

2. Wake up next day- HUGE SCAB on bridge of nose (thought I broke out), and had bloodshot right eye. Thought I had pink eye...

3. This went on for 2 more days, head began to swell on right side over eye and scabies developed, pain also moved into right ear. Finally made apt with doctor.

4. Saw doctor this morning, he looked at my face with puzzlement, then alarm, and after saying I had Shingles (and giving me a prescription for antivirals) said I needed to see an optometrist immediately. (I actually had Shingles into my eye, a very rare occurance!!!)

5. Went to the optometrist, she checked to see if my cornea was scratched, and thankfully, not too bad. She just gave me some ointment, and that's it.

All in all, I'm glad I didn't wait longer and follow my own advice to wait out Pink Eye and hope it goes away on its own, otherwise if I could have done myself serious damage.

I had Shingles in February of this year. For the first week I had no scabs, just really bad back pain on my right side; I thought I had pulled a muscle or something. Then during week two I got scabs on my back and headed to the Doc. The Doc gave me antivirals and Percocet (I was hurting pretty bad). It took two more weeks to heal completely.

Hang in there, it'll get better.

WTF... I need to read up on shingles.
I thought they were some 17th century disease that poor peasants got.

As far as the pain goes, I am already on Neurontin for something else, and that's what they generally give for Shingles anyways, so they didn't give me anything else. I suppose I could always ask for something if it gets much worse.

Basically if you've had chickenpox at any point in your life you're at risk of the virus (which is dormant in your body) becoming active again and getting shingles.

Had that when I was in my early 20's. I couldn't sleep for 3 days because the rash went all around my torso and made laying down to painfull.

I had shingles about 3 months ago. I went to the doctor because my entire side was in pain and thought it was kidney-related. He didn't find anything and thought it might be related to the hernia surgery I had 2 years earlier. One day later, I woke up, and had the shingles rash all along the right side of my torso. It hurt like a bitch for over a week and I'm sure it would have been even worse if I didn't catch it sooner and take the drugs he prescribed.

You might have meant that as a joke but ironically one of the things the Lysol folks do indeed promote it as a Herpes killer (albeit a SURFACE one).

There is a Shingles vaccine but it's very expensive and good luck getting insurance covering it for a younger person (<50).

It's kind of cool because its located only across 1 specific dermatome. I always thought that was kind of interesting from a medical perspective.

Heh. Cool for you because you don't have it. Do you enjoy my suffering?:p

Yah, that's why Neurontin works well as pain mgt for Shingles, and other pain medication doesn't.

I'm amazed so many people on here have had it, and I assume most of us are all males <40? (I'm 40)

Welcome to the club. I'm lucky and get them on the corner of my mouth; only minor itching. I hear the ones on the body hurt. This is the first that I've heard about it breaking out on the nose.

It can break out anywhere just like Herpes. It's the fact it's in my GODDAM EYE that's killing me!!! It itches like crazy.
