I have been on the lookout for good deals on used speakers on Kijiji for about a month now and yesterday I saw a deal I could not believe.

A Sutherland ST-50 5.1 CH Surround Receiver Amplifier system for sale for $75.00

OK, I looked it up on the internet and found this site:

Sutherland Technology

The system in question ST-50

Check this, Valued at $3229.99

I could not believe my luck, picked up the phone and talked to the lady. I told her the system was worth over 3 grand just in case she did not realize this. I did not want to take advantage of her!!!

She seamed perplexed and said she would call her brother who gave her the system.

She called me back half hour later and told me she still wanted to sell it for $75.00

This all sound a little suspicious so far but I see an incredible deal here so I go for it.

I hoped in my car and drove to her place. The unit looked a little rough and the center speaker was missing but she told me it worked great. I did not bother hooking it up, paid her $80. and drove home. DHOOO!!!

I got around to checking it out tonight and it turned out it only has multichannel inputs and I could not get the sub to work. I took it apart and this did not look like a $3000 plus system. Everything looks cheap and the sub turned out to be fried. (I am not having much luck with sub woofers lately).

Well I figured if the 4 little speakers are working I was still well ahead of the game so I hooked them up as speakers B on my system and compared the sound to my newly renovated Wharfedale E70 speakers. The Sutherland speakers sound like crap.

Not understanding why such "high quality" speakers did not sound perform, I did more research on the web and found this:

White van speaker scam

Some pictures of those "$3229.99 high quality speakers"

Fuck, I got taken but I know where the lady lives. I gave her a call and she told me she would take them back. I will be at her place Thursday afternoon. She even apologized for the sub not working.

We will see what happen Thursday.

Cliff:

1: Kijiji has 5.1 stereo system on sale for $75.

2: Internet advertisement has inflated prices for speakers.

3: I bought them and now realize this system is just garbage.

4: I will try to return the speakers Thursday

Conclusion: I am an idiot.

Just email the King of Zimbabwe, I heard he is looking to get rid of some money under the table and it would probably be enough to reimburse you for those speakers.

I don't think it's greed, because he told the lady that he saw it advertised for a lot more than her sale price.

This is exactly the white-van scam... I've even seen that brand before.

The only thing is the OP didn't get 'scammed', the lady's brother did when he bought it...

Edit - looked at the website... shens meter is beeping a little... those $3k speakers look like cheap chinese garbage, which is what they are.

Nice.

Edit: Less nice: The forum setting to disallow more than a single level of quoting.

PM the info please.

Seriously, this is an actual industry with cheap ass product fraudulently advertised to be worth thousands.

I would have never went anywhere near this deal if it wasn't for the "info" on the web.

Wow. The label on the mini speakers actually said 300 Watts. Suuure.

You spend all that time making a sub... and then this?

so sad

http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=47441

I was just writing about this today in what is soon to be version 3 of the general audio thread (since the move to vbulletin destroyed the old one)

I am still working on that sub and returned the defective one yesterday. The new one should be here this week. In this thread I was actually trying to get a decent system for my son if that maters.
I am going to read you link now.

And it's only $80.00 so no0 big loss but as you say the more people are made aware of this scam the better.
Cheers

not exactly. the traditional white van scam is a van that drives up to you at a gas station or large parking lot and makes an offer. This sounds like the type of speakers you usually get from white van. "Acoustic Response" are the speakers that I got many years ago... :D

but it's not so much that it is a scam, the speakers usually work, and they aren't great, but can be had for cheap.

...I suppose the scam from white van is that they are probably stolen, and not nearly as good as you are lead to believe. but they're quite cheap, usually.

Ouch...yeah, a quick look at those speakers and you should've recognized that the "MSRP" was a weeeee bit inflated.

I looked over your post really quickly at first...and did a double take when I thought you were talking about some Sutherland Engineering equipment. In which case, for $75 I would've ran to her house. :p

Usually the white van speaker scam is for speakers that have a name similar to bigger names, but different from the more expensive stuff. It's to trick people into believing it's a big name while protecting the sellers from prosecution for forgery if they're caught.
