Is there a way to kill them by using chemicals lying around the house, or maybe some sort of food they eat then die?

google doesn't really help, some weird concoctions or it tells me to buy traps which like never work.

Thanks any help would be much appreciated.

Hide their insulin, they'll die off quicker.

Ants are not that hard to kill. I prefer a campaign of torture and terror. I'll isolate a trail of ants. Most of them I'll crucify on little crosses made out of toothpicks. I'll light a few of the others on fire, so they'll start running back to their nest. When you find the nest, pour kerosene in it and light them up. The ants will run out and see their brothers crucified all around them as they slowly burn to death.

Any ant that survives that will know not to fuck with you.

I bought some traps a few years back not sure of the brand but they had an orange label and we got it at Home Depot. We put them out one day and the next morning we literally had hundreds of ants on the walls visiting the traps. It was freaky. After that we never saw another ant in the house. I used the same stuff at my GF's house and it worked there as well. She didn't get hundreds of ants in her kitchen they just disappeared.

Terro. I had the same problem and this stuff is AWESOME. All the little ants will circle the liquid and eat it up...day or two...they're all dead. Fantastic stuff. It's cheap and available at Home Depot/Lowe's.
