Wow, nice nice, the M-Audio sounds like a freakin' gold mine. When did it come out? I wonder why I haven't heard of it before.....

Does anyone else have any burn-in advice for the HD280's? Should I totally blast em? what type of music should I play? all mixed, or in shifts of diff genre's?

do a search there.
you'll get lots of opinions. if you just keep listening and they'll burn in eventually

Best way to burn in is to just loop a CD at a level that's loud, but not blasting. Put them on and up the volume until it's just a little too loud and then leave them. It took my Senn HD-600s about 3 days to come around. The 280's are totally different though, I have to say I wasn't too pleased. But everyone's different so give them a shot before returning them.

The D66 mod works wonders btw :)

Check out head-fi.org's cables/tweaks/accessories forum for the new mod that's out.

Does it matter if I turn off the music every once and a while during burn in? I live in a dorm, and you can hear the music while the headphones are cupped, so I turn em off at night.

and great forums, i'll be sure to look through them!

Put them in a padded box or something.

I would advise you to be careful on the head-fi forums. I started browsing around last week after finally reaching a breaking point on headphones.

In two days I dropped $200 on:

Grado SR-60's (defective, "grattle" in the right driver - I'll be exchanging them)
Koss KSC-50's
Panasonic SL-CT570

I'm already plotting where to go from here.

My next purchase will probably be Sennheisers (HD-600) + $200 or so on an amp.

Damn me and my expensive hobbies.

burn-in does play a large part, but reading head-fi.org led me to believe the HD280 are very overrated and is a big disappointment for most

its just not the source--because im listening to koss portapro through my soundblaster live! value and they sound great

Boo, so I take it I've made the wrong choice in headphones? They were only $75.99 shipped though. :(

The 280's are a closed phone, and I prefer open. Senn quality varies wildly throughout the line, and model number can be misleading. For example, the 580 is far superior to the 590. And the 570's absolutely blow. If you can't afford the 600's, the 580 is the same except the frame is made of a stiffer material.

Well, I had some avg headphones before, and I was just looking for a moderate upgrade. I wasn't looking to spend more than $100 on a pair of headphones. I read that open were better quality, and sounded better, but then I enjoyed having closed so that I could listen to my music at whatever volume I wanted as to avoid bothering my roommate who sits 5 ft. away.

So given those conditions, what headphones would you recommend? Under $100 (or at least around there) and closed?

Well, what exactly is it about the 280s that you don't like? The Beyerdynamic DT 231 is a nice sealed one for under $100 and is easier to drive with no amp. The Sennheiser HD 497 is probably the best sub $100 phone IMO, but it's open.

There really isn't anything I don't like about them, yet, but I agree with some of the comments that the sound is a little "tinny" and there isn't much bass. I'm hoping that will loosen up after I burn them in for a while.

I suppose for me, these headphones will do just great. I'm not really a hardcore audiophile or anything, just wanted an upgrade from my Sony MDR-V250's. :)

an amp should clear up that "tinnyness" depending on how crappy the klipsch is. revo + cmoy asap ;)
and yes, they should loosen up

Yeah, the Klipsch pre-amp really sucks. When I disable the speakers, I can still hear sound coming from them. :( But then I figure the Klipsch preamp is better than just plugging it into my comp.....

Oh, and where can I get a CMOY Amp? is that a specific brand, or what?

And during burn in, is it alright if I turn off the music every now and then? i.e. my roommate turned off the music last night, b/c he couldn't sleep with it on. Is that alright and will it effect the burn in process?

good grief I sound like a newb. too bad I am! :(

The key is accumulated time, you could use them 30 mins a day for the next few months & it would break them in fine. However, running continuous for a few days allows you to enjoy their full potential much sooner.

Wrap them up in a towel & stuff them inside a tightly sealed box. I'm sure you can find something to keep them quiet.

You can find plans to build your own amp, or you can buy pre-builts from places like http://www.headphone.com/.

I dont' think I trust myself enough to build my own amp. I'd probably make one that would eventually ruin my headphones or something.....

Would you recommend any good pre-made amps? Any suggestions? Are all amps this expensive?!? :Q The cheapest one is $119.....

Any good amp recommendations that are a bit cheaper? :( I don't think I"m capable enough to build one myself, and what's a CMOY amp compared to a normal amp? Same thing?
