I got shot in the face...

During a hockey game last night, I went charging to the net and the play ended up behind the net and I got knocked down. As I lifted my head and started to lift myself up, I saw the puck maybe 2-3 feet from my face and had no time to react.

I was hit right above my left eye. It knocked out my eyebrow piercing and I got a big 1.5" gash that was really deep. It required 8 stitches.

The stupid thing is, I've been playing without a cage for about 5 years now. The game before this the guys on the team were saying "You're the only one on the team not wearing a visor or a cage".

I was planning on getting one for the game last night and I forgot to pick it up.

What are the odds that in 5 years, the game I was planning to buy the cage for, I get shot in the face?

What bad luck.

It could've been a lot worse though. 1 inch lower and I could be blind right now...

Reminds me of when Steve Yzerman got hit in the eye with a puck a couple years ago.

Glad you're okay.

I used to play without a visor and I got knicked on the side of the helmet a few times. When I made my college team, a full face shield was required so I got one and haven't looked back. Now that I do have the full visor playing in a local league, I've been hit in the visor with high sticks and pucks more times than I can remember. I don't know how some people play without visors. You actually have to sign a waiver if you decide to play with anything less than a half-shield. The rink doesn't want to be liable.

What's worse is that if you high-stick someone with a half-visor accidentally, you can get a bigger penalty because of cuts, etc. When you get someone with a full shield, the refs rarely call anything unless you nailed his helmet pretty hard.

BTW, I couldn't deal with a cage... the bars were not very helpful with vision... had to go the clear visor route. No problems with it fogging up either.

You obviously don't play hard enough to sweat. ;)

Sorry I haven't seen Fargo.

It's good to hear you're ok. Are you gonna get a piercing again, once that wound heals?

I played for ten years without a visor or cage, and have the scars to prove it. Growing up in Saskatchewan, no one wore a face shield except the goalies. I lost two teeth, got cut many times and seemed to have a black eye about half of the winter each year. I would definitely have worn a shield if they had been available.
