California had a scholarship fund where they would give you a grant of $2500 towards tuition if you scored a 4 or a 5 on both a AP Calc test and an AP Science test. I got a 5 on both AP Calc BC and Physics C, and I called to claim the grant for the upcoming tuition and they said they are out of money...WTF

I had to wait until the new year to claim it. And they said they have no money so tough sh!t. Considering I goto a state school, the school should just deduct it from the cost my tuition....I wish.

I thought you got state bonds that were worth $10 each when they started. Did they take away 250 bonds? I remember cashing in 100 bonds worth like $11 each. Or was it 10 bonds at $110. Something like that.

Never had that. Youd just login to their website and tell them to which school you wanted your grant transferred to, and theyd send it.

Dunno, but they'd send me statements every year telling me how many bonds I had and how much each were worth.

How's that classified as "getting screwed"? Did you loose any own money? That would be screwed.

Yeah, if they would have given you the money then the taxpayers would have been getting screwed.

Well I can understand about budget cuts and such and if they wanted to stop the program fine. But they shouldnt tell people 'we are going to give you this money at the beginning of 2004' and then when you call it's not there.

How can someone get screwed out of something that wasnt theirs to begin with?

It was a gift. You just didn't get a freebie. Hardly getting screwed!

Are you sure the program did not have a limit, as in they'd support the first 1000 qualified applicants? In that case, the program could've legitimately run out of money.

They were probably hoping the legislature would give them the funding that they needed.

Unfortunately, California is so far in debt from overspending that there is no money to give. The Governator did try to get the legislature to cut out some of fthe pork, but bringing unneeded spending back to their home turf is one way politicians keep themselves in office.

Start voting, and realize that every nice-sounding social services program means either higher taxes or taking money from some other nice-sounding program (like your scholarship program). Or as the libertarians say, TANSTAAFL.

I just think that they should pay out any money that was agreed upon at the time. If they want to cut the program, thats fine, but they should do it for the current year and not the past. I needed this scholarship to cover my tuition, now im screwed.
