I got rear ended today

SAWYER

Lifer
I was at a stop light waiting to turn right and a Dodge work truck smacks me. He claimed he was stopped and let out the clutch, but I think that is BS due to how jacked up my car his. Now my problem is I hope they don't just total it due to it being a 99, I want my car fixed and to keep it, especially since it is paid for

If it is declared a total loss by the insurance company; you may still have the option to keep the car with a salvage title.

This would be the best-case scenario. The OP will get the maximum money for his car, and he'll be able to keep it.

I'm really worried that something like this will happen to my '92 Mercury Cougar with 125k miles on it. With how little I drive it (~8k miles/year), it should last me a looooooooooooong time.

If it is totaled, I wonder how much I will get. If it is 1-2k I will be pissed, 3 I would be ok with but prefer to just get it fixed

Passenger side quarter panel - $619.74
Trunk lid - $469.33
Tail light lens/housing - $165.65

Plus labor, paint, misc trim pieces, etc.

I'm sure aftermarket would be cheaper, but that's OEM Toyota parts from partznet. I'm not sure if that quarter panel is fixable or not..a good body guy might be able to save it..I dunno.

Can't see the entire right side, but that quarter panel is buckled a bit. Plus a new trunk lid, taillight, bumper car, bumper reinforcement bar, probably trunk floor.
Does the passenger doors open and close the same as before ? ? If they do it can be easily, but not cheaply fixed. If they do not, frame is bent and I would junk it.
Note: You can probably find the Trunk Lid, Tail Light and maybe the bumper rebar, bumper cover at a salvage yard at considerable cost savings. Your body shop will need to paint new parts anyway, so used for those items will be fine. You want new for quarter panel, trunk floor.

OP:

KBB list your car, private party value, between $4900-$6100. That is a 1999 XLS with 100k and good body. I did not select any option, just a bare 99 XLS trim.
150k miles is between $3300-$4500

What will happen if it is totaled is they will low ball you. They will call and say your car is worth $2900; where can we send the check... What you say is you think that is a little low do you have a fax number or can I e-mail you local listings showing a greater value.
Now you need to go to autotrader and craigslist and find all the 1999 Avalon's you can that are priced at the upper range. Send the highest 3 Ads to the adjuster, try to have at least 2 of them be from dealers. They will then come up with a better number. Might only be a couple hundred more or maybe another k. Either way its more money for little work.

Good luck and update as it plays out.

That will work somewhat, but it helps if the rest of the car is in great condition.
When my car was rear ended (1999 Grand Prix) 3 years ago, they lowballed
at $3800 .. But the body was in tip top shape for the age and I had just put a tranny in it 2 months before the incident. I ended up with a check for $5800 after paying $200 to buy it back. Then fixed it for $4K

OP, I had my truck totalled back in 2004 and I had few if any problems with the person at-faults insurance adjuster. Recommend you do your research and start forming your expectation as to what they will offer if they total it. At that age they will typically do so but if the vehicle has low miles and was kept in good condition they will take that into consideration. Case in point: My 1995 Nissan truck was purchased for $13.5K in late 1994. When it was totalled in June, 2004 (10 years old with 75K miles) the insurance company offered me almost $7K ... for a 10 year old truck.

If it is totaled, I wonder how much I will get. If it is 1-2k I will be pissed, 3 I would be ok with but prefer to just get it fixed

I did a quick search and they seem to be selling for anywhere between $5-7k retail around here depending on mileage and condition...if you can find one. I searched for your model year only and I found 13 for sale within 100 miles of north county San Diego.

The adjuster just left and said ballpark figure my car is 5-6k, and if the total damage is 70% of the value it is totaled.

A '99 should be worth what like $5k-8k?

Depends on whether your frame was hit. Honestly, I would take a total over driving a potential death trap.

....frame... MOST PP cars, not trucks, these days don't have frames they have a unibody meaning the frame is the body of the car. So if the body is crumpled the "frame" is crumpled.

Pretty sure the OP car is a unibody.
