I got my BFG 7800GTX today.

I'm connected to a 2005fpw, so 1680x1050 in both games.

System specs:

A64 3200+
Asus A8N-E
2x512 Corsair ValueSelect
74gb Raptor

HL2: All details maxed, 4xAA/16xAF, ~35-75 fps in single player mode. Pretty consistent > 60 fps in CS:S.

BF2: High details, 4xAA, 16xAF, ~25-99fps (all over the place, but stays pretty smooth throughout, I could probably use some extra RAM to stop it from hitching).

The 7800 replaced an MSI X800XL and it's noticably faster. I could not run BF2 with the settings maxed out on my X800XL at all. HL2 hasn't really improved, which is odd to me.

Edit: I tried using FRAPS with BF2, but it made my computer crash 🙁

Edit 2: I just ran 3dMark 2005 and got a 7224, how good is that?

Edit 3: Help me in here:

I dont want to be rude, but not many people care. There are tons of real reviews out. If everyone who got a new card.. made a post like this, that would be 90% of the topics..

Unless you're just trying to brag.

im interested there are lots of reviews but i always like to hear from a non-reviewer especially when they run the same resolution as me cuz most reviews dont have 1680x1050 marks

Ackmed, do you have enough room on your trophy wall for yet another A$$hole award?

To OP: Congrats on your mofo of a vid card. 😉

Wow, that has got to be one of the most bitter posts I've ever seen

Ackmed lacks what you might call, people skills. May be extended to any life form skills.

Thanks for the mini-review. Nice to see some feedback with something other than a $600-800 cpu in the mix.

edit: btw there's a command line FPS string, I forget what it is atm but if you look around you can find it

Great card, congrats on the buy. I think people should post what they are getting even though there are tons of reviews everywhere. Not everyone has the same system specs etc, and seeing what people get on different cpus/rams/mobo's etc gives you a better idea, especially if your a person thath as similar specs.

Also does it come bundled with any games?

any review is good, its a lot of money to plop down for a video card, so any reassurance on performance is good.. good post.

I dont lack people skills, I just tell the truth. I said I wasnt trying to be rude, and I wasnt. Most people dont care. And if everyone posted some "benchmarks" of their new cards, thats all this forum would be. Admit it or not, you know its true.

25-99 frames? How does that help? There is not even an average. Its not being rude, its being truthful. To prevent this "review" from going off topic even more, Ill just drop it. Im sure others wont though.

as a matter of fact you are being rude, I for one am glad he took the time to share...

glad to see that you have some good results...as for the ram, I went from 2 x 512 to 2 x1024... noticable difference, took care of the lagging appearance, didn't really help fps, loads better and unloads extremely better...have a 2005 also...

with the 2 gigs of ram i notice an improved load time in other applications also...
i use renderer.drawfps 1 to get my frame rates...fraps is not a good solution to use to gather pfs...

resolutions should not be a critical part in your fps in my experience (i have a 6800 u)

good luck

Thanks for the replies. Ackmed, I'm not trying to brag at all. Before I got my card, I looked at every post I could find about people with 7800's to get an idea of what to expect, so of course I'm going to post my results as well to help others out. Most every benchmark of the 7800GTX is paired with an FX-55 and 2 gigs of ram, which I can't afford, so I thought a "real world" gaming system with an "ok" CPU's results would be a good post.

When I said 25-99fps, that's as good as I can describe it. There is no real average I can calculate in my head just by looking at the numbers (remember, fraps crashes BF2). My fps was all over the place when I was playing, but stayed pretty smooth. I guess if you really want to average it, 25+99 / 2 = ~64fps, but I'm guessing it was more like ~40-50fps average.

About 2 gigs of ram, I definitely think I need it. My load times aren't bad, but they aren't great either. My unload times are even worse. When I type "exit" in console, it takes about 25 seconds for my computer to calm itself and be usable again!

The card doesn't come with any games that I know of, just a bunch of utilities and software (none were worthwhile to me, I can post them if you guys like).

Also, I want to get feedback on my FPS. I switched from a PC desktop to an Apple Powerbook for a while, so I was out of the gaming (and PC) scene for a while. I wanted to make sure that the fps I was getting wasn't horribly off.

The 1.02 patch fixed this for me.

I don't mind hearing 'real world' observations...

Let all of us that share knowledge prosper.

It is quite impossible to make someone who does not have "people skills", realize that they do not have people skills. There lies the paradox. Honestly Ackmed, I can find more meaningful and less mechanized conversation from a toaster. You are right about keeping things on topic however. Do let's.

Dude, come on, only 4xaa? I want to see 8xS aa with transpanency supersampling in half life 2!

I think those settings at 1680x1050 would bring his 7800 GTX to its knees.

BTW, how did you get BF2 runninig at 1680x1050? I thought BF2 didn't support native widescreen resolutions?

Congrats on the Video Card, I originally wanted the BFG, but I was getting my system together and I couldn't fine one available at the time. I got the eVGA one and OCed it to 490MHz and 1.30 on the RAM. I'm really happy with it considering I went from a P4 1.4GHz and a 9600SE, you can imagine the grin on my face when I saw all that detail.

Anyways, are you using video settings in game, or through the control panel? I find that the games look much better when using in game settings, I set Antialiasing and Anistropic to application controleed, Image quality is on high. Make sure to turn on Gamma Correctiong Antialiasing and Transparacy Antialiasing. There just little things taht make the game look a good bit better.

I ussually perfer these kind of reviews to reviews that "review sites" do. Of course I look that the ones Anandtech and others do but real world results are much more useful than a system that is soley dedicated to gaming and often formated with barely anything running in the background.

To run BF2 in a different resolution, I made my shortcut look like this:

"C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\BF2.exe" +menu 1 +fullscreen 1 +szx 1680 +szy 1050

kman79: That is quite a switch!!! I do some settings through the control panel and some through the game.

Crescent13: I'll give it a try, but my computer might explode 🙁

I just ran 3dMark 05 and I got a 7224. Is that pretty good (once again, I've been out of the PC gaming scene for a while now)?
