Well I got a computer today, and I was able to get through my very first LINUX install (red Hat) Verry easy ( I was prepared to be totally stumped!)

I thought I was getting a compaq but alas it is an HP

Pavillion 6736

celeron 667
64MB SDRAM
20 GB Quantum HD
intel Graphics (11 MB shared) <- Could find a way in the bios to drop this down or where it is set
CD ROM
M50 Monitor ,- tiny tiny tiny
polk Audio UNPOWERED Speakers
On board Sound
Modem I need to pull

I should the first of two Network cards hopefully this week and go buy another this weekend

I was going to put two hard drives in and run them in RAID BUT there is only room for One more Drive🙁

It is one of thoose MINI cases so I am just gonna get a 40~60 GB drive to use as the file server drive.

need to buy ram (wife wouldn't let me snag one of the 256 sticks out of hers!🙁)

and then run the cables and build a shelf under the stairs in the basement!

using the KDE desktop and hopefully I can get thing up running as my fileserver this weekend!

I am pretty happy and my wife has no idea why. (she is pregnant and moody so she is missing alot of my joy😀

its redhat...probably in vmware....my question is: why in the hell do you want linux to look like windows?

i went to linux because i hate windows and wanted to get away from it.
 
you got plenty of harddrive space.. 20 GB is plenty.. just get more ram (128 minimum) and a Realtek network card.. and you should be fine.

My linux box is a P2-400 and a AMD K6-3 @ 333 .. however the K6 box is going to have FreeBSD installed since the new P2-400 is my new box with a bigger hard drive. I got a 10gb hdd on that one.

probably for the same reason that I want XP to look like WIN2K Pro... while you are learning the unfamilar it makes it easy if there are some familar looking things on the landscape.

What you're seeing is VNC, which is a really cool tool if you want to do X-Windows remote desktops. VNC is *much* easier to setup than standard server-client remote X-Windows.

It's free (speech) software too. 🙂

i only have my own experiences to reference, and my own experience is - i hate the windows gui! 😛 very badly laid out IMO.

different strokes for different folks i guess 😀
 
congrats on the installation...i prefer mandrake myself...but is all good...

vnc is a pretty awesome tool to use as well...takes up a lot less resources than PC Anywhere...

Yea, it is a nice tool, but I find it a bit on the slow side.

Well, no problem over Fast Ethernet. 😉 I don't think VNC was designed for slow-link connections.

You might want to try tunneling it over SSH w/ compression. In fact, we all should do that.

Well I stole a 256MB Stick of RAM off the wifes P3 850 (hopefully she won't notice):Q

Just need the hard drive as this will be our file server.

I have a netgear Fa 311 Card on the way but after reading up on it it seems this could be tricky to get working. 🙁

Yes the Instal was easy I am going to the half price book store this weekend to get a book on RED HAT. Basically I have a computer with ZERO Function as of now BUT that should change (this weekend)🙂

The memory did make the hestitation in the mouse go away so I should be GOOD TO GO!😀
