I'm not blind so, so far so good.

$3420 for custom wave front lasik after a few referral discounts and insurance paying a laughable amount. Went to one of the best doctors in my area cause, duh its my eyes.

20/20 vision after 2 days. Supposed to get better. Slightly hazy but no halos at night. Things are just really bright.

Surgery was less than 30 minutes long. Kinda freaky but after the first eye, the second wasn't bad at all. After the anesthetic wore off though that was a pain. I just took the ambiens they gave me after and slept through it all and the next morning felt way better.

Overall, 10/10 would do again.

as someone with like 20/800 vision, part of me would love not needing glasses

but the risk of messing my eyes up is too great

glad to hear that it worked well for you!

OP, how old are you? I am 50 and started thinking about doing this again. I know I would need readers, but I need them now anyway.

Just turned 25. My prescription has been stable for years now so I was good to go.

My dad got lasik at 56 about 5 years ago but his was a bit different cause he did the monovision lasik thing where he fixed one eye for farsight and left the other for near. He hasn't needed readers yet but he told me it's getting there.

is it worth getting if you have 20/80 without glasses?

I googled and found this.

Diopter Measure 20/20 Measure
-1.00 20/40
-2.00 20/80
-3.00 20/150
-4.00 20/300
-5.00 20/400
-6.00 20/500

I was -4.00 and -4.25 L/R so about 20/300. I basically couldn't see without contacts.

I remember being -2.00 around high school age and not being able to recognize unfamiliar faces at night so I was say yes, it's worth it.

Congrats! I finally got it done a few years back. I'm super squeemish when it comes to eyes, just water drops I have trouble with. The thought of contacts was a big no, I just can't imagine having to touch my eyes like that or have something else touch it. But I was also sick and tired of glasses. I was like 20/6400 or something crazy like that. I did not even know it was possible to have eye sight that bad, I just got used to it. Basically without glasses everything more than a few feet away was just a blur. I was considered legally blind. 30/20 and 40/20 right after the operation, then 20/20 within a few days.

The hardest part to go through was all the eye drops before and after, the actual procedure was crazy fast. It felt like it was no more than a few minutes per eye. 20/20 would do again. (but hopefully I never need to)

I think it cost me around $3,700 or so. I have big pupils apparently, so that added more to the cost. lol

I find I still get halos though, they're not as bad now, but I still get them. Mostly at night or if looking at a bright light against a dark background. Like if I look at the blue LED on a black monitor I see a halo on it. But it's not really bad enough to be annoying. It sure beats wearing glasses.

As a side note that trip was also my first time at a Costco. It was pretty awesome. I don't know if the fact that you could buy a jar of peanut butter big enough to feed an army that was impressive, or the fact that I could see so far without glasses and could really "test" my eyes well by trying to read labels from a distance.

Downside of all this is they told me I'll probably need reading glasses by 40, and I'll be 30 soon. But either way I was stuck with glasses so way I see it is I bought myself about 10 years of not needing glasses at all, and when I hit 40 I'll only need them for reading.

Cool, thanks. My prescription has been pretty stable for years, decades actually. Did not know about the mono vision thing. I know my eye doctor said he had his eyes like that but just sounded too weird to ask him about. Now I know.

Obligatory - I don't need lasik!!! I need a bigger monitor, a chair that leans back more, and longer arms.

One of the best choices I made was to have lasik about 10 years ago, still have nearly perfect vision, not much of a halo issue to speak of.
Definitely recommended if you have a good doc. I went to New England Eye Center)
No need for any drugs other than some xanax to calm me a bit. ~30 seconds per eye, and they even counted it down as the laser was cutting my lens.
Ok, smelling your lens burning was a bit odd (smelled like burning hair), but that's the worst thing about it. No blades, all laser, including creating the flap.

I got it done back in 2003 when they still needed to use a scalpel on your eye to expose enough to the laser.

I have a bad astigmatism, so the tech at the time couldn't remediate all the flaws, but I came out with nearly 20/20 anyway and it's only slightly degraded since then.

One thing, is I do get some nasty halos at night (I think due to the tech at the time), but I've actually learned to use them for depth perception. I can usually get a pretty good idea of distance from how the lights halo and can use it to my advantage.

i don't wear glasses day to day (i probably should) but i wear them at night around the house or when i'm watching tv or doing work at home. i always wear them driving at night.

it would be really nice to just get lasik and have 20/20 vision immediately without having to put any glasses on. i have an astigmatism but i dunno, there is something about it that i'm just scared of. i know the technology has been around a long time and it's super safe now, but still ... it's my eyes, and i only have 1 pair that can't be replaced if something did go wrong.

Ya, in in the same situation. . When failures are 1/1,000,000 instead of 1/100 i might do it.

i know you're being sarcastic with your numbers, but i'm pretty sure the failure rate is actually a lot closer to the former than the latter.

I tend to get a lot of junk in the corner of my eyes for some reason (maybe eyebrow dandruff, dunno) so I have to rub my eyes a lot to get the junk out, and that's always stopped me from looking seriously into it. I'm just afraid I wouldn't be able to NOT do that long enough for everything to be healed properly

Q-Tip and water to clear away the junk on the edges. You just don't want to vigorously rub your eyes cause the flap is still movable.

But yeah, I get urges to rub my eyes but stop myself lol.

I don't think I'll ever get it. I'd love to, but I think I'll just keep getting more nearsighted until I finally die. With much of my time being spent looking at a screen or books, it just gets worse. I'm about -4.25 now

Lulz, I'm about -7.00 but don't want to deal with the trouble of Lasik -- risks, recovery, cost, etc. If they could "beam" it into me I'd pay... Wearing my contacts now and things are somewhat blurry because they're a really old prescription.
