I got hydrocodone for Christmas, what'd you get?

I blew out my knee yesterday during my lunch break. (yeah, I had to work Christmas Eve, ended up only working half a day) I'm not exactly sure how it happened... I just put my left foot down as I was stepping into my car with my right leg and my left knee gave out, twisted and popped (more like a crackle/crunch). The next thing I knew I was laying on the ground and had to grab a handful of my pant leg to lift my leg up off the ground and let the lower half of my leg twist back around to the way it's supposed to be.

Long story short, it swelled up, I went to the ER, they immediately drained 100cc (a syringe about 1 inch in diameter and 6 inches long) of blood from it. I had x-rays to make sure there wasn't any damage to the bone and there wasn't. The diagnosis is a torn meniscus which is supposed to heal by itself without surgery. He said there's also a possibility of another torn ligament, I can't remember the name of it, but that one would require surgery... similar to an ACL tear.

So I have a knee immobilizer, crutches and some hydrocodone. I have to see an orthopedic surgeon to get a better idea of what it's going to take to heal. I'm sure I'll be going to physical therapy too when it's healed enough

So, yeah... Merry Christmas?

(edited to hopefully correct rendering issues)

With an open script for hydrocodone I'd be merry as hell and loving it. Sorry about the knee, but look at it from the bright side.

But really...how do you fail that badly at getting out of your car?

It was getting in... but my best guess is my foot was at an awkward angle and when I twisted slightly to get in, the knee just gave out.

And the hydrocodone is ok... not strong enough though. Tomorrow I might see if they can give me something stronger. The generic pills I picked up are 7.5mg hydrocodone and 200mg ibuprofin.

I feel your pain. I had pretty much your same injuries when I was playing HS football. I was a lineman and had the whole pile crunch me while my leg was bent behind me in a weird position. My knee still hurts sometimes, but they taught me some great exercises ini physical therapy that I use when it acts up.

Sorry about your luck and all. But seriously, only an ATOTer could severely fuck up their knee getting into their car 😕

I'm sorry to hear about that, but do you somehow type with your knees?

Yes, I typed that whole post with my knees. Why do you ask?
😕

Forgive me-- This is how your post rendered itself in Opera for me. 😵

Oh... wow... that's pretty odd. I did copy and paste cause Chrome locked up when I tried to post the first time, I wonder if that had anything to do with it.

Thanks for the kind words thus far, all. Despite the knee injury, this was one of my most enjoyable Christmases lately. This year I was able to get my parents something nice that they'll enjoy but wouldn't have bought for themselves. Got my mother an 8 GB iPod Nano in purple and my father a Canon A590IS.

weird!

I edited it... hopefully that'll correct any rendering weirdness... although it looked fine in Opera for me.

Sometimes I wish I could take hydrocodone...I have 3-4 bottles of the stuff in my "drug box" left over from my knee surgery.

I'm one of the .5% of the people who are seriously allergic to the stuff...codeine and hydrocodone.

Oddly enough, I can take oxycodone (percodan) and oxycontin (also oxycontin) with no real problems. (I also have a couple of bottles of those left over too)

As for your knee injury, odds are, the x-ray didn't really show much...they usually don't, except to confirm damage to "hard tissue" like bones.

You'll need an MRI and/or CT scan to really know what's happened inside the knee.

I blew mine out in 03 by taking a bad step and hyper-extending the knee...severely. Tore (and basically demolished) the ACL and ripped the medial meniscus to shreds. I don't have much cartiledge in the center of my knee left...the rest of the cartiledge is in decent shape though, so the ortho doesn't want to do a replacement...yet.

Here's a couple of decent knee links for your perusal:

Thanks for the links, very interesting. I'm trying to remember what the ER doctor told me about what he thought it might be. The diagnosis on my papers say torn meniscus... but there was something else he was telling me about as he was examining my knee and moving it around so I didn't really commit what he said to memory. One of the possibilities he said would heal on its own over time, the other would require surgery. From what I've been reading, a torn meniscus often results in surgery. :frown:

My understanding is that the meniscus won't ever actually heal on its own, BUT, depending on the severity of the damage, it may not need surgery.

IMO, if it's not already been done, make an appointment with your family doctor and get an MRI done, IF the knee doesn't get better within 1-2 weeks...(you should still see your doctor for a follow-up soon)

Don't have a family doctor, but I have a referral for an orthopedic surgeon that I'm going to call tomorrow.
