Hi,

you can tell i am clueless when it comes to networking. I have a cable modem connection and I bought this linksys router 4 port. it said i could run multiple computers on one purchased IP. ummmmm..sounded good, but now what do i do to set it up ??

one word. HELP ! and please don't explain in FRENCH...simple english, i appreciate it, thanks.

There's a quickstart sheet that comes with the Linksys router that's extremely simple 🙂

Basically, plug cable modem into router, plug computers into router, set up computers for TCP/IP.

Actually, all you need to do is make sure the computers are on dhcp.

In the WAN plug, put a cable going into the cable modem, reset the cable modem (unplug it plug it back in) plug in your computers, and type http://192.168.1.1 and if everything works well it should promte you for a password. The default is "admin".

Good luck. It's fairly simple.

- Control panel
- Networking,
- Bouble click the TCP/IP settings for your network card.
- Make sure "Obtain an IP address automatically" is selected,
- Reboot,
- go to start, run, and type winipcfg
- select your network adapter,

If the ip is something like 192.168.1.100 or 192.168.1.101 something like that then DHCP is enabled.

The manual that came with your router actually is very concise and easy to understand. I suggest you read it first. I don't have a Linksys router but I have a manual from one I bought and returned to CompUsa. Guess what got left behind?
