Well, digital coax and digital optical should be sending the exact same signal afaik... so it shouldn't make any difference.

In theory the optical will be less affected by EMI, however I seriously doubt you would be able to tell the difference between the two unless you had some super sensitive lab instruments.

They should be all about the same...

Anyways, you should calibrate you receiver and speakers anyway, so it shouldn't really be an issue.

Your speaker's efficiency is going to be the main thing that's going to make a difference for final volume. Your receiver/amp power is going to be the next most important. Oh, and the number of speakers will obviously help you (more = louder).

If you have a decent receiver and speaker set though, you should be able to get ear splitting volumes without a problem anyway...

Is this your z-5500 set again, or a real receiver/speaker combo?

Cables actually attenuate the signal. Larger cables tend to attenuate less, however noise factors in as well.

That's really the beauty of digital - it doesn't matter how much the signal gets distorted, as long as the reciever can make out a 0 from a 1 you get the correct output.
