I work in the IS&T department at my university. About 6 weeks ago I got a raise from $7 to $9 per hour. $7 is the intro rate, and technically I got my first raise before I was eligible for it in Networking (though I would have been eligible for it Desktop Technicians, where I started out, which is how I weaseled my way into the raise). Today I accepted a transfer out of the Networking division, and to the server admin area. Along with that transfer comes a $3/hr raise, bumping me to $12/hr. I'm going to have a faster computer, a better permanent monitor (I had just been given use of a 19" LCD for the summer due to my performance in Networking, but they couldnt figure out a way to permanently give a student a 19" LCD when most of the full timers have 15" and 17" LCD and CRTs), and better desk position (ie, no one walking behind me). My new room is the coldest office space in the university, as it is connected to the server farm. However, I like the cold, so this is a very good thing.
$12/hr isnt bad money for a student worker, IMO. I will, however, miss two things from being in Networking:
-my view of Lake Erie from the 10th floor. I'll still have a window, but it doesnt face the lake.
-I wont be able to torment users from my new position nearly as often, as it deals with back-end server apps. Tormenting users was the best part of working in Networking
. OTOH, now I wont be talking to any users in my average work day, either.
I heard from a co-worker that my old boss was "bummed out at the bar" (exact quote) today after work, because now he doesnt have anyone who actually works AND that plans to be there for more than another semester (and this is out of 7 student workers besides me) (paraphrased). But I had told him ahead of time that I had been approached for this position and was considering it, and I have offered to split my time and/or work OT until he finds someone to hire, so I dont feel that I screwed him over. I think he feels the same way, but we'll see how it goes.
So in practical terms this means I'll definitely be able to afford my CCW and either a Glock 30 or 36 at the end of the summer.
