I work in the IS&T department at my university. About 6 weeks ago I got a raise from $7 to $9 per hour. $7 is the intro rate, and technically I got my first raise before I was eligible for it in Networking (though I would have been eligible for it Desktop Technicians, where I started out, which is how I weaseled my way into the raise). Today I accepted a transfer out of the Networking division, and to the server admin area. Along with that transfer comes a $3/hr raise, bumping me to $12/hr. I'm going to have a faster computer, a better permanent monitor (I had just been given use of a 19" LCD for the summer due to my performance in Networking, but they couldnt figure out a way to permanently give a student a 19" LCD when most of the full timers have 15" and 17" LCD and CRTs), and better desk position (ie, no one walking behind me). My new room is the coldest office space in the university, as it is connected to the server farm. However, I like the cold, so this is a very good thing.

$12/hr isnt bad money for a student worker, IMO. I will, however, miss two things from being in Networking:
-my view of Lake Erie from the 10th floor. I'll still have a window, but it doesnt face the lake.
-I wont be able to torment users from my new position nearly as often, as it deals with back-end server apps. Tormenting users was the best part of working in Networking :(:(. OTOH, now I wont be talking to any users in my average work day, either.

I heard from a co-worker that my old boss was "bummed out at the bar" (exact quote) today after work, because now he doesnt have anyone who actually works AND that plans to be there for more than another semester (and this is out of 7 student workers besides me) (paraphrased). But I had told him ahead of time that I had been approached for this position and was considering it, and I have offered to split my time and/or work OT until he finds someone to hire, so I dont feel that I screwed him over. I think he feels the same way, but we'll see how it goes.

So in practical terms this means I'll definitely be able to afford my CCW and either a Glock 30 or 36 at the end of the summer. :D

wow, that's a pretty big raise.
the rate is good too.. around here part-time tech supports are lucky to start with $9 /hr, usually it's $7.50 or $8.

My condolences.

;)

$12/hr in Cleveland is easily $20+/hr in most of California, which is where your profile says you are. I've heard about the rent prices around some UC campuses, and I dont know whether to laugh or cry. FWIW, I ended up laughing my @ss off ;)

I see what state you live in though, and $50/hr wouldnt make me want to go there :p

And you get all those donut jokes told about you for free, too!

I was leaning towards the G36, I have fired both the G30 and G36, but it was not on the same day. As I remember it the G36 seemed a lot smaller, but I fired it later and so it was probably my hands growing a little bigger, since the spec sheet on it says it is only 4mm slimmer. And even assuming I use the 7 round magazine with the finger extension, thats 1.33mm per round of magazine capacity given up. So now I'm leaning towards the G30.

Well, I do like a good joke. ;)

I was just glancing over the specs on Glock's site. You must have smaller hands than I do, because even the 23 feels too small for me (speed-reloading is difficult because my hand extends beyond the bottom of the grip), so the 30 & 36 would be tiny IMO. Are you dead-set on the .45?

I actually have fairly big hands, but the G21 looks too big for CCW (though the G30 is actually less than a 1/3" shorter than the G23, and a bit wider). Unlike you I wont be wearing this out on my hip most of the time, and thus small size is important, if for no other reason than comfort. Otherwise I'd be all over the G21, especially with the likely sunset of the AWB and thus the ban on 10+ round magazines.

I'm not dead set on the 45, but since my uncle reloads it for his Colt 1911 I can keep range costs down as he will do it for me at his cost + a six pack of beer. I like the 10mm for example, but the ammo is much more expensive when you like to shoot often. I'm a big enough guy to handle the recoil without a problem, and the 45 ACP is historically a proven round where it truly counts: terminal ballistics. I dont plan on shooting anyone wearing Kevlar. I dont need a really high capacity pistol; if I encounter something that 20 rounds of 45 ACP doesnt get me out of, a pistol is not what I should have been packing.

If, OTOH, you hear of a good deal on a well maintained pistol, pass me a PM, as long as it is suitable for CCW... ie PM me a proposed deal on a Desert Eagle 50AE and I might just send you a pound of bacon wrapped around a 20 pound weight, COD :p

I'm actually going to try to CCW the G22 when I'm off-duty. I can hide it fairly well with a loose t-shirt & my Fobus paddle at about 4 o'clock with it canted forward. I have a Star PD .45 for backup (did you see those pics I posted in one of Shockwave's threads?), which is about the size of a G23 (and holds 6+1 rounds), but I have a handcuff/mag pouch that'll hold a G22 mag and the IWB holster I have for the .45 isn't as comfy as the paddle for my Glock.

If you can get that kind of price on the .45 that'd definitely be the way to go. Luckily I get all my .40 rounds free, and I got 25 .45 rounds for free from one of my colleagues last night. If I do see a good deal I'll certainly pass it on to you. Feel free to pass along any low-cost G23s you may run into, too. :)

I do know a Glock dealer and I'll see what kind of a deal he is willing to cut me (and I'll ask about a G23 while I'm at it). But if I were you I'd be looking for a G18C :D:beer:

EDIT: and on that note... good night.

$12/hr not bad? That's amazing. I was a considered a rich man when my student job paid $7.50/hr 3 years ago.

Congrats.

Hah, I don't think they'd let me carry a full-auto anything...plus I'd actually have to *pay* for the ammo. :p

Congrats.

The best part is both my old and new bosses are extremely cool about the flexibility of my schedule. And my new boss is letting me carry over the unofficial comp-time (students arent supposed to be able to get comp time) from my Networking job, and he is cool with letting me use it for an entire week, or possibly more if I can work up the comp time) at the end of the summer so that I can have an actual vacation. And that comp time I had earned at $9/hr is going to be paid out at $12/hr ;)
