I got an OEM SATA Seagate, does it need a special Serial ATA Power Cable

I ordered a bunch of goodies from zimzoomfly, including an Abit IC7-MAX3.
Does my hard drive need a special Serial ATA Power Cable.. or would the generic power cable that came with my MOBO work !?

I have Western Digital SATA drives so I am not 100% sure but I do think the Seagate drives need the power adaptor. Unless your power supply has SATA power connectors. My PS has SATA power cables, I wouldn't need an adaptor even if it didnt though, WD SATA drives have inputs for both types of cables.

You should be able to go to a local shop and pick some up cheap I would think.

OK let me rephrase my question ...
Is there any difference between the power adaptor that is bundeled with my MOBO .. or do I need a special power adaptor for Seagate that is proprietery to Seagate only !!

It's not proprietary to Seagate, your adapter will work fine. The SATA power connector is standardized on all SATA drives.

on the power supply subject, whats the best one to get with sata power cables? Im getting ready to do an upgrade and was just starting to do my research.

You might as well, seeing that SATA will become standard and future SATA drives will run off of the 3.3V signal from the SATA connectors (adapters only deliver 5V and 12V)

Thank you all for your input ! ..
Newegg confused me because they have a sata power cable listed for Seagate only !

On another note ... are you saying that the SATA drives will get power from the MOBO .. it's ironic because before I got into the SATA thing .. when they first came out I thought that they would get their power from the SATA connector !! it's only logical, but didn't turn out that way !

On newegg a lot of people are saying that the sata seagates are kind of noisy in comparison to non-sata drives. Any input on this? How loud is it?

My Fortron 350W from Newegg has one SATA power connector which quickly got parked on my Raptor.

JimRaynor ...

Check out www.storagereview.com -> Database -> Head-to-Head. Seagate's are traditionally much quieter and cooler than the competition. Granted their performance seems to be sacrificed, but not by *that* much.
