What was your GPA?

If my GPA literally sucks (2.4) but my GMAT is 750 do I have a chance for top school?

they care more about work/internship experience as well as letters of recommendation. I have an urge to brag in threads like these, but it just occured to me that it's really annoying when other people try to inflate themselves in front of others.

congratulations cchen! Columbia is an excellent school and was definitely one that I considered going to 🙂

LOL looks like somebody is jealous.

i wouldn't say that he's jealous. sygyzy never really has contributed positively to any thread; i often see his sarcasm in just about every thread i read with his presence. i think he's just very bitter in life and has nothing else to do but to boost his ego by insulting people in ATOT threads.

if i'm wrong, well, i'm wrong, but it's pretty evident by his tone in all his posts that he is never happy for anyone and simply enjoys to discourage rather to encourage.

and if he's simply sarcastic for the hell of it (since he has nothing better to do), well, someone please show him the great outdoors.

congrats dude. You really want to take two more years of school right away?

Now tell us, what was your secret.

Congrats. I'm thinking of B-school but I want to get some work experience first because my cumulative GPA sucked. I'm personally leaning towards trying to get into UA (Manderson) B-school because it's relatively close and supposed to have a relatively high ROI for the education.

I'm more interested in starting my own business, and also a restaurant, which is why I wanted to go straight out of undergrad. That being said, I've already worked at a top consulting firm as well as a bulge bracket IB. I'd consider a summer associate role next summer, but I don't think I'd want to make a career out of it.

mmm... what kind of restaurant... one of my dreams too

Thanks! Don't be mad that I'll be making more money than you when I get out.

working how many hours? I'd rather get home from work at 6 or so everyday and have the weekends off.

that's the thing, and the other is... how much you make vs. how much the education you got that got you the job where you make what you make, is eating back out what you pull in in salary.

wasn't that a funky sentence.

Cumulative is 3.74 right now. Major is 4.0. For the master's classes I've take, 4.0.

2.4 is not good. But if you have good experience, and can defend why you did not do well undergrad, you still have a shot at a top 10.

Despite the fact that Columbia has dropped in the rankings lately, it is still ahead of UMich. And in NYC, Columbia's reputation far outweighs UMich's. That being said, UMich is still an excellent school and one that I would have considered if I had worked first.

how did you study for the gmat? i did OK on the GRE (M/V/A 760/680/710), but my friend showed me some sample questions for the GMAT, and i was thinking WTF??! on some of the sentence correction questions. what's the best way to prepare for it?

congrats, btw!

I can say with certainty the reputation part isn't true. I work in the industry in a very well known fortune 50 company led by a management team considered by many to be the best in the world. UMich MBAs are extremely well regarded here and are company is full of them at all levels, despite the fact that we are in Texas. Lots of HBS, Sloan, Kellog, and Wharton grads also. There isn't a single Columbia MBA in the company. Other companies I interviewed with (GE, Microsoft, Intel, P&G to name a few) recruited the hell out of UMBS.

Umich has a pretty strong rep for a bunch of reasons - lot of prominent research and economic indicators (consumer sentiment for one) come out of the school. Also has what is considered a very strong real-world case-based curriculum.

Congrats man! I have a good friend who's a JD/MBA at Columbia (did law last year and just started the MBA part this year.) He says the business students there are a good crew. He's looking to do private equity when he's done...no idea where he'll be this summer though.

Maybe for another thread, but do you think fulltime mba is the only way to go, or is a part-time/online ok too?

thanks!

I don't want to argue, but I believe its true. Many Columbia MBA graduates go on to Wall St, which is why in NYC, they're more highly regarded, perhaps due to just their sheer numbers.
