Nothing, it's a belt/sash to carry the blade. Daito (long sword) blade up = katana, daito blade down (suspended) = tachi, daito uncarried = daito. Though the blade sizes usually differed by about 8cm between the katana and the tachi, the way they were carried dictated the name.

You rock. I eat this stuff up.
Just like ownage pie. 😛

So how do you keep from slicing your belt in half when you pull it out, effectively dropping your pants in front of your enemy? Or is that the whole idea? Intimidate him with the "other" sword?

The blade is still in a saya (scabbard) which is supported by the obi.

Actually, the blade creates a forcefield around it when not in battle mode. This forcefield keeps a distance between the sash, sword, and body.

Ah HAH! Don't forget to turn your force field off before you start swinging! You'll just give the dude bruises instead of cuttin him up!

No such thing. Depending on size, it'll have one of three or four names. Most common is the Katana which will be the full-size blade, primary offensive/defensive weapon of the Samurai. There's, like, Wakasashi and Daito and stuff, but I don't remember which is which based on length or how to properly spell them.

There's also Odachi. That's a very long sword.

Yes. I have one of those. 🙂 It's not something you really try to control with one hand.
