Go-bots were actually more metal than transformers were. And yes, go-bots were around well before transformers.

I'm pretty sure TransFormers were actually around before GoBots were. GoBots were more plastic than TransFormers, the only GoBots that were largely metal were the Super GoBots.

Not a chance. I know my bro and I were playing with our gobots a good year or so before transformers were released. I remember distinctly our first encounter with transformers was when we went to Roses one night to buy some new gobots. They didn't have any on the shelves, so the lady went into the warehouse and pulled out a cart loaded with transformers. "Is this them?" she asked. This was before they were released. We sh1t our pants. He walked away with starscream and that other jet, thundersomething. I made off with that gay-ass red van. :(

anyway, all of mine have the wear-and-tear that a kid would put on toys that they actually played with. While I do have a few boxes for some them; I wasn't a 30 year-old basement dweller collecting them to sell on Ebay. So, I'd consider the collection pretty worthless. Besides, kids' toys these days are so crappy. We're keeping them for the new young ones...

A friend had the original Ultramagnus and he was just huge compared to all the other Autobots.

Thats Hot Rod, but they can't call him that anymore. Something about trademarks on the Hot Rod name.

I had that one. You put your thumb over the sticker on the front to show the autobot logo thingy. They used horrible glue to keep the stickers in place back then. They fell off quite regularly.

So your one childhood memory constitutes fact?

I dug mine out. GoBots were pretty much all plastic, minus the Super GoBots. A couple of the small ones do have metal in their torso, but that's about it.

hehe, so true. we did buy our stuff at Roses/K-Mart/Big Lots. THough, that's all we had in our po-dunk town.

I remember my gobots being metal....it's been a while though, and I don't think I have any left. I probably buried them along with all of my brother's star wars figures years and years ago ;) (family tragedy....)

from what i can remember Transformers were out before Gobots. Also Gobots were more designed for smaller kids then transformers. they were far more easy to to transform and most were made of plastic. also they were far cheaper.

From what I have been able to find, it looks like both series of toys were released in the U.S. in 1984, I haven't been able to pin down specific release dates yet.

I'll do some searches; but I swear to you: Gobots were available (at least in my market) before Transformers.

EDIT: so, according to wikipedia, both were released in '84. Gobots adapted and imported by TOnka, and Transformers adapted from Takai and imported by Hasbro. I suspect that Gobots were released first; and either concurrently, or as a direct reaction to competition, Hasbro inked the deal with Takai to import Transformers. I believe Takai's line was better established in Japan than was the Gobot equivilent, thus giving Hasbro a numbers advantage, quickly whiping Gobots from our pathetic memories...oh well.

The Gobot version of Megatron did suck (stupid motorcylce with wheels for arms--had that toy), but the leader was cooler than OPtimus Prime: F-16. What does a semi have against an F-16? Sure, Optimus has the better name, but he would get ruled in a street duel with the patriarch of the Gobots.

Sorry, didn't provide link....eh, look it up yerselves :)

TransFormers were adapted from Takara. Evil GoBot leader was Cy-Kill, good GoBot leader was Leader-1, and was an F-15.

I think that one of the mini-cons for the Optimus Prime in Armada (or whatever) was called Leader-1, as an homage to the Gobot toy.

I was in college when the craptastical Beast Wars were out. They weren't real Transformers. Gobots always seemed like a cheap knock off of the Transformers. I never knew they were around before the Transformers.
