I got a pissed off high bidder prob

My auction ended last week and the winner sent a money order. He is out of state and the total was $188. He got a money order from his bank though and not from the post office. So when I deposited yesterday, the clerk said that $100 of it will clear in 5 days and the remaing $88 will take a full 7 days to clear. I email the guy last night to inform him that the soonest I will ship will be next Monday and he flips. Says that he should've sent a check if that was the case and asks me for my bank's telephone number. I sent it to him.

Are my bank's policies unsusual? He shouldve gone to the post office, right? He has a lot of pos feeedbacks, but I don't trust NE1.

Seriously, money order = cash. As in: you plunk down cash on the barrel to get the thing. Go back to your bank and tell them to quit being such ignorant chodes....they ought to know better, being a BANK and all.

It's like people not taking traveler's checks thinking they're a "check"...drives me f*cking crazy..:|

I'm not sure, but i'v never heard of a bank doing that with a MO, but then again, i'v never got a MO of that size befor.

<< Never heard of that.....any money order is as good as cash
I thin your bank are confusing it with a check
>>

I think so too. Some bank tellers are just sooo plain dumb. They drive me nuts at times. There were a few occasions where I had to point fingers and instruct them what to do (and of course, they insisted that I was wrong).

i sent compuwiz 2 money orders of a combined cost of around $275ish... they were wells fargo money orders, and he sent me my stuff right away.. didnt have to clear or anything... soo yah

I jst called the bank and got a new story. $100 of the 188 is avail today, but the remaing 88 does need 7 days to clear. The person explained that its an out of state MO and that all banks have that kind of policy. Thanks for the input, y'all. I am not shipping till the 11th.

I think the other guy has a right to be pissed off then. Its not his fault your bank is a bunch of puds. Money orders aren't free, so he spent extra money to send you one of those for quicker shipping over a check. If you are making him wait the same amount of time as for a check, then he wasted up to $1 just cause you are being overly-anal.

Your bank's being dumb. Money orders do not need to clear; that's their whole purpose. They're as good as cash, with the added benefit of havign someone's name on them to limit fraud. Don't be a jerk and screw this guy because your bank is dumb. It's bad karma.

I'd be pissed off, too.
It takes some effort to get a bank check.

What your lovely bank clerk did not tell you - they just don't give YOU more than $100 immediately, the wait with the rest until they get it from the bank.
However, it is still guarantueed.

If I were the high bidder, I would open a can of whoopa** on you... 🙂

Change banks, or get out of the business. You have been told by the best members here that your bank is wrong. If you stay with that, then you get the grief that goes with it. Your attitude towards this problem needs adjusting. It is not the buyers problem. It is YOUR problem.
Send the guy his stuff. He acted in good faith, you are not. Send his stuff before you get in a legal crack.

Do you remember who the money order was from? I imagine if it was a American Express money order there would have been no problem. Some of these companies that convenience stores use are not as stable as one would like.

A money order isn't cash. It's a promise that the money order company will redeem the money order for cash.

yeah, your bank is stupid. I cashed a $3000 money order before without a problem at my bank. You need to take your business elsewhere if they're gonna jerk you around like that.

Do you remember who the money order was from? it was from his bank, a bank MO.

Ouch, you're right, but I don't wanna get beat either. Thats a pretty hard line Tripleshot, but these overwhelming opinions are convincing me to ship before it clears. If I do get beat for the loot, I am gonna pitch a bytch in here.

This is a small bank, and they don't charge monthly fees. In the NYC area they have only 4 branches, and one of them is in my neighborhood. I'd change banks but would be charged a fee at most any other bank for min bal requirements.

thanks again for all the input

Money orders can be canceled with the reciept. So until your bank can draw funds from the other bank the funds are in question. Cashier checks are not refundable without the check and are as good as cash.

MO aren't the same as cash, they are just usally made to appear so. During the LA riots a large number of check cashing stores where robbed and rolls of blank MO stick where stolen. Gangs then used those MO to purchase large ticket items (one tried to purchase a large screen from me, I had been called/warned by someone else so didn't accept). The person who warned me did accept the MO assuming them to be as good as cash, however his bank accepted them and then bounced them a few days later since they where stolen.

John is exactly right! I've worked as a bank teller for a few years and nothing is guaranteed unless it is cash. I've gotten a MO from the post office and it was improperly dated (2000 instead of 2001) which made it staledated. You may not have a history of depositing such MOs or even checks which will make the bank behave cautiously. The MO could have been stolen or forfeited - they can't be sure.

If you bitch enough to your bank, though, you can get them to call the issuing bank and verify the MO. But I'd doubt they'd do it since it's out of state. Good luck Stifko! And teach me some more Serbian cursing, will ya? 😀

The high bidder has the following record on fleabay:

909 positives. 824 are from unique users and count toward the final rating.

2 neutrals. 2 were converted from users no longer registered .

3 negatives. 3 are from unique users and count toward the final rating.

so I am going to ship tomorrow, all these other ATers seem to think that I am wrong to sit on the item till Monday.

I just emailed him and said that I don't feel like he should be penalized b/c my bank is a lousy one.

That's very noble of you. I've never like the "send money first, merchandise later" philosophy. They are things of equal value. Maybe someday, the post office will devise a way for us to send stuff simultaneously (i.e. with proof to both parties).

Stifko,

Shipping now is the right decision. Frankly, with that feedback, there should have been no hesitation.

The $100 is in good faith. I know for a fact. I had $655 in money orders(2 MOs), I deposited them on Dec 28, and they wouldnt give me my money till Jan 11. Its standard banking practice, because money orders can be forged, they are not as good as cash. Anyone that says his bank is wrong, well is wrong. The only way a bank will deposit the money order right away is if you have more money in your account than the MO is worth. MO's and Cashiers checks are not as good as cash, they can be forged. His bank is protecting itself from fraud.

With the problems I've heard about stolen money orders and such, I can't believe more people aren't encouraging him to wait until the funds clear.

He can still get screwed by this. If you need it to ship immediately, get a cashier's check.
