I got a new(old but new to me) riding mower

SAWYER

Lifer
My old rider was constantly throwing belts and I grew tired of dealing with it so I finished up last season with my push mower. My yard is an acre so I definitely didnt want to do this all year with a push mower so I came across this John Deere LT155 and bought it. It is old but looks very good, the previous owner took care of it and had it serviced every year at the dealership. The old man that owned it died and his son had it in storage. He said it is due for oil change and I was wondering can I just use any 10-30? I know JD sells their own oil but I am sure it is just over priced regular oil. Any other things I should look for and check?

You should be fine in using any name brand 10W30 oil as long as that is what it calls for. You should also do a cross reference check on the oil filter if there is one, as JD replacement filters could be 2x to 3x the price of an equivalent filter from an auto parts store or walmart.

Where do you live SAWYER...? If you live in the South I would opt for either 10-40wt or even 20-50wt oil and heck even because it is an older mower I opt for the 20-50wt oil anyhow...? I own and run a mower shop down near the coast (about an hour from the Gulf of Mexico) so I run the 20-50wt oil...

About right for an oil filter... 😉

BTW that is a good looking older John Deere mower... 😀

I would opt for 10-40wt year round then it should cover you through the spring and summer... Dont mow to much in the fall and winter up there... I know I used to live or was raised north of Conway AR...
