I got a nasty cold sore

I use to get them about once a year but haven't had one in like 3 years untill a couple days ago. I use to pop them once they full developed and cleaned them well. But I didn't know they was contagious untill recently and now I don't wanna pop it or even touch it.

It itches but I can tolerate it. But its starting to look nasty I think. I don't know what they are suppose to look like without popping them. Mine looks yellowish with a little white(could be dead skin) and crusty looking. This normal? Should I pop it? Or will it clear up on its own?

Its been about 3-4 days since I got it(from the time I noticed it).

It's already developed so a good portion of the OTC stuff is pointless for you. Keep Carmex on it to prevent your lip from splitting and you've got to ride it out for about a week.

i usually use this 'campho phenique' (sp) cream. seems to work well. i also used abreva but it was expensive and didn't seem to have made it heal faster.

Abreva does seem to work you just have to start applying it when you first feel the tingle of it coming on.

Prodrome stage - Before a blister appears, one usually feels a tingling, itching or burning sensation beneath the skin, usually around the mouth or the base of the nose. This is the best time to start treatment.

Ulcer stage ? This is when the blister opens up revealing a reddish area. One is most contagious and in the most pain. Usually lasts 3 or 4 days.

Crusting stage ? The blisters dry up and a crust forms which is yellow or brown in color. Do not pick at this crust. Usually lasts 1 or 2 days.

Healing stage ? A series scabs will form over the sore, each smaller than the previous one until the cold sore is completely healed. Usually takes 5 days to heal fully.

I knew what it was but was just wondering should I pop and clean it since it has a nasty yellowish/crusty look to it. How do I know if its infected?
