I got a job working at a Long Distance Telephone company, it doesnt pay much (only 24k then after 6 months a review) but I guess its fine for me since im still in college and its a young company and I can still move up within the company, I start on monday.

Today I got an email from another company asking me to call to set up an interview next week. This job pays more (25-30k) and is alot closer, the only thing is its not 100% definate that I would get this job, as compared to the other one.

My question is, do I just ignore this email or do I write back to them stating that I just recieved a job offer and I start monday and would have to decline there offer for an interview.

What would you do in this situation?

I would say go to the interview and get a feel for there company. Its not like you have to accept the job and if you like it you can just give your two weeks notice at the other one. And you dont have anything to lose declining this new offer if they want you but you like the other job better.

the thing is I start monday and they want me to come in Tues or Wed so I wouldnt be able to call in sick or anything since I just started this job, also it wouldnt look good on my part to ask if I can take off.

hummm well what I would do is let the other company know you currently have a job and are seriously interested in them and can they setup the interview around when you have time off.

Most companies will not have a problem with this because it shows them that even though you are seeking other employement you still know how to handle your responsibilities.

If you're just starting a job, its not a good idea to go looking for other jobs
Very unprofessional if you just start then leave for another job

Just take the job you already have. 24k in the hand is better than 25-30k in the woods.
It would be unproffessional to accept job 1 and then quit it after a week or two.

True, but as I said. 24k now is better than MAYBE more later. Taking a day off the first week to go to another interview is un proffesional IMO.

But it's still up to you to decide.

Thanks for the advice FrustratedUser

I was thinking the same thing as you, better to take 24k rather then a MAYBE of 25k+

Oh please. Long ago that used to matter, now Companies have ZERO loyalty or "Professionalism" towards employees so why should he restrict himself???

Maybe the companies that you've been involved with, but IMO, professionalism will get you very far in industry.

now wouldnt that depend on the company you're working for? there still exist companies that take care of their employees :disgust:

That's exactly what I would do and have done in the past. If they are interested in hiring you, they should be willing to have an interview a bit later in the evening than they normally leave...

Tell your boss your have a school or personal commitment that you forgot about, and go to the interview.

Tell company #2 that you have a position, but would be willing to interview at some point during some off time. If company #2 is truly interested in you, they'll be willing to accomodate. If they're not, they'll say something like ... "Sorry, but we really need you to come in on {insert day}"

Usually if something is THAT restrictive, you're probably one out of several to be interviewed and then it wouldn't be worth the bother and I'd stick with company #1.

If company #2 is accomodating, then they're showing true interest. If company 2 wants to hire you and it looks like a good longterm deal, then go for it. You only get to swing the hammer a few chosen moments in your life, you gotta swing when you can.

Remember though, right now, YOU have control over your situation and that's a VERY powerful tool.
