After a bunch of interviews, I've gotten one offer. There are a couple of other places that I am interested. The one offer I have is in New York, but I would prefer to stay in Pittsburgh for personal reasons (gf), not to mention cost of living.

I've had a few interviews with interesting places in pittsburgh. I'm wondering:

A) If I should tell places i'm interested in that I have an offer from somewhere else
B) How I should go about telling them?

thanks

How far are you in the interview process with these other companies? How much time do you have til you have to get back to the company in NY?

I've only had first rounds with these other companies. I have to let the NY company know by Dec 1st, so I do have some time to get other offers.

just tell the hr/contact in other places that you just got an offer, but you really like the opportunities there and if there is any way they can expedite the process.

They're giving you more than a month to decide? That doesn't make sense.

My school's policy requires them to give me that much time, since they recruited me through the career center.

You should contact them. Tell them that you would like them to know the complete situation. Explain that you have another offer on the table but were interested in their company and wanted to make sure you had all the information before you made your decision.

I did this when I got an offer and the other company made their offer the next day.

If you have to say something, I'd be about as cryptic as you were with us: "it's a bank/engineering firm/hospital/whatever in NY." They aren't going to press you beyond that.

Not that you plan to do this, but I wouldn't dick around and take the whole 5 weeks just because your school says you can. Job offers can go away, particularly if the NY company up and decides that it needs to slash expenses with the economy in the shitter. And besides that, it doesn't make a particularly good impression to leave a potential employer hanging for weeks, IMO.

Now that you've got the ball rolling, you need to keep going with the other interviews and get all your offers on the table so you can make a decision within a reasonable timeframe. It's OK to tell the other companies what the deal is -- that you're interested, but you have another offer(s) and need to make a decision soon.

No, big nono.

When I was in the same situation, I mentioned the company name. Just so they know the offer is real and a good company has made the decision to hire me which showed I was a valuable asset.

But I am sure the other company would ask since such and such big shot company gave you an offer, why don't you go ahead and take it. So you need get your story straight like how much you like the company and you will almost certainly take the job if the everything is agreeable, to make sure they feel they won't be wasting time on you, giving an offer to you only for you to go for the other job.

The bolded part is very good advice. If you take too long, the NY company may feel slighted or their plans may change and your job offer may be withdrawn.

Nope that's not me. There are plenty of CS jobs around the country. I am in Chicago and I got hit with like 5 calls just last week from recruiters on programmer/analyst related jobs.
