I swear I was only doing some window shopping to see what I could do with a budget of $200 for a mountain bike! then I saw this bike for $130 and couldn't hold on to my credit card....🙁 total was about $141 after taxes

I didn't get mine from walmart/target.
I got it from a sporting good store here

the bike original cost was $500 and it was on clearance!

Well congrats on the bike.

But in all honesty, it is NOT a very good one. Sorry to have to tell you this.

On the bright side, I read a story in one of the bike magazines years ago about this group of guys that always rode together. Well except for this one guy that didn't;t have a bike. One weekend he shows up with his BRAND NEW BIKE and now he can finally go riding with his friend. (His friends didn't have the heart to tell him his new bike was a P.O.S.) Well he kept up with them all day and had a great time. They figured he didn't KNOW his bike shouldn't have been able to do it, so he DID it! And when he finally DID upgrade, he would be a force to reckon with.

I guess the bottom line is, A BIKES A BIKE to some extent! Have fun!

(and start saving for a better bike 😉 )

I was expecting motorcycle pics till i saw "$141". Oh well. Glad you like your new bike. I used to ride BMX and my friend had a nice mongoose.

I picked up a bike not to long ago myself . .

Got lucky on it, found a used Raleigh for about 100 dollars. I believe its an SC30, not sure about that though.

I was looking for a used bike around that price range, but I also needed one big enough for me (i'm six and a half feet tall).

I walked into a bike shop and they had just gotten the raleigh in earlier that morning, and it was a 22" fram which (they told me) was the largest I'd find without going custom.

It rides well, I just needed a beater to get around houston a bit (I'm a rice freshman). And sure enough, its the largest frame on any rack I park it on. I'm happy with it.

My bad. I clicked on your link, not a used sporting goods store. Still, that's pretty heavy but enjoy it. Hell, my Trek probably weights close to 30 lbs with all the crap I have on it.

its good - for 140$. "Decent" bikes start at around 2-300$.

As for locks, just get something thick. Steel cable ones are easily cut, so get a U-bolt or something like that if you're paranoid. All depends on where you are, though: middle-of-nowheres won't need super locks as much.

As for brand name, Kryptonite is what comes to mind, and I would reccomend them, were it not for the most recent issues.

i had that exact same bike for less than a month, paid about $240 for it two summers ago. the gear system never worked properly and every time i went up a hill it would drop gears on me, it can get real painful after a while, trust me. i ended up returning it after the chain got caught and stopped the back wheel randomly while i was riding it.

i hope that mine was some sort of lemon and you have better luck with it. i've heard good things about kryptonite disc locks (the round locks can be picked with a ball point pen so dont trust those)

(btw i ended up spending around 300 on a raleigh m60 (a year old model) which is what im still riding)

I got a trek about 2 years ago for $400 alhtough I had a cheaper "starter bike" if you are more of a casual rider that bike will probably suit you. If you want to go light trials then its probably fine. If you want to be all hard-core I would find something with a more proven frame and better gears/cranks.

My Trek is a 930 and it is about 6 years old. I rode it quite a bit on some pretty serious trails for about a year until my riding buddy shattered his ankle on a ride with me. I had to pedal for help and he got a steel plate and a bunch of pins in his ankle. He never rode again after that. I never rode alone on trails again after that. I threw some slicks on it and started commuting to work on it. It's a good bike. Probably needs a new fork but other than that I'm happy with it.

I got a trek navigator 100 about a month and a half ago - until then, I was riding the wal-mart variety . . . wow, makes a world of difference.

A crappy bike is better than no bike at all, but if that bike was a computer, it'd be an emachines with a cyrix processor. And 40 pounds is not light. I have a freeride/dirt jump bike that weighs 31 pounds. A light mountain bike weighs 23 pounds.
