I got $1000, MAKE ME A COMPUTER

EDIT: sorry budget cut
I am:
Moderate Gamer (cs:source mainly)
Heavy video editing (adobe after effects, premiere)
Moderate Flash animator (probably doesnt matter)

what should I get?

make a list if anyone is bored! (mobo, processor, video card, ram)

how 'bout using the search function? it's kind of annoying when we have to design a computer for every other person. there are plenty of threads about this. look at them before you post.

Something like:

X2 / Conroe
Motherboard to suit above
7900GT or X1800XT
2GB ram
HD
450W Fortron PSU

If you can hang around a while then conroe looks like a nice improvement over AM2.

Recommend waiting.. I build a premiere mchine using x2 3800 last year... my cousin, who uses premiere professional said it was crazy fast... good time to wait for conroe/am2 as 939 is slowly going away.

Do you really just need the mobo, processor, video card, ram? Are you really just upgrading an old computer? If so, are you actually going to reuse the HDD and DVD-RW?

If you're going to start threads like this, you should be very specific about whether you need a monitor/speakers/keyboard/mouse/case/etc.

well i said if you are bored...you don't HAVE to

people have other budgets/preferences

anyways

i need the whole enchilada (except speakers)

monitor, keyboard, g5 mouse, case, sound card, etc...

I don't know how much the release of Conroe is going to affect the lower end of the spectrum ... and he's talking about $1000 for everything including case/monitor/keyboard/mouse. I'd build something like this:

CPU: Intel Pentium D 805 Retail $111.9 (ZipZoomFly)
mainboard: ASRock 775XFire-eSATA2 $84.5 (ZipZoomFly)
video: HIS Radeon X800XL 256MB $168.66 (newegg)
HDD: Western Digital 250GB SATA WD2500KS $83.99 (ZipZoomFly)
RAM: G.Skill 2 x 1024MB DDR2 533 $143.98 (newegg)
CD: NEC ND-3550A black DVD-R $35.99 (newegg)
case: Cooler Master Centurion 5 ATX $64 (ZipZoomFly)
PSU: Xclio 450BL $50.36 (newegg)
input: Logitech G5 mouse $47.99 (ZipZoomFly)
input: Logitech Internet Pro keyboard $16.66 (newegg)
LCD: Hanns-G 19" 8ms w/ DVI cable $189.99 (newegg)

That comes in a little under $1000 delivered. Waiting isn't really going to help you -- I don't think the cheapest dual-core CPU is going to get significantly cheaper in a month.

I would wait for at least a month or two, after all the "new stuff" is out and the prices more affordable.
Remember, you need a fast CPU for video rendering. I'm using a 3500+ and waiting for a 4800+
You should have better choices and better deals for sure.

The new Conroe chips will cost a fortune initially, but it is a good idea to wait because the prices on the other Intel chips will go down accordingly.
