The city council is voting tonite on whether or not to enact a Daytime Curfew for those under 18. This could be the worst possible thing ever for me. I'm 17, graduated high school early, and go to the local city college. I have a nice job. I move back and forth between work and classes constantly; I do alot of consulting on the side, so I'm out and about quite a bit; I do my various personal errands everyday. If this law passes, I could be arrested simply for minding my own business and affairs in the city. WTF? Can I sue about this law? What about if I'm arrested, can I sue? If my legal life is affected because of this, I am going on the war path. The City of Fresno will wish it never head of me. GRRRRRRR!!!

See below for update!

If it passes, you can't sue for anything.

Edit: They've passed laws stating that murder is illegal. It doesn't mean that if I murder someone I can sue the state. I wouldn't worry, though. Those laws don't usually last very long if they even ever get voted in.

daytime curfew???

THat's insane... though in Los Angeles there is a night time curfew for under 18 unless accompanied by an adult ( I think ). THere was a ballot for the day time curfew for school students to curb truancy but I think that was squahed. If you have graduated they really cant do anything if you carry paper work regardign it..

As long as you are minding your own affairs and not causing trouble, doing your everyday stuff should not present a problem, even if the law passes.

My home town instituted a nighttime curfew, but it didn't really do to much. All you needed was a note from your parents, and you'd be okay. And, anyone who was "caught" was just sent home, I think. Basically, it ended being a "no loitering" law. If you were going about your business, no one would bother you.

I suspect it'll be the same in your town. If they start getting Gestapo on your ass, I'm sure there'll be enough outrage, that things will be toned down.

Many daytime curfews in other areas require them to take you to school. I was a homeschooler and I've been following this for a while. Dumb idea isn't it? I mean, in theory it sounds good but there are so many exceptions to the rule it just gets to be a nuisance.

we have an 11 o'clock curfew here in my town, and all it basically means is that you cant be wandering the streets aimlessly. you have to have a good excuse (heading to home or work) and the cops are pretty lenient towards you. just avoid being drunk and not having an excuse and you should be fine (should the law be passed, god forbid)

it's an excuse to write kids up that are ditching school. They will leave you alone if you're doing work...not a big deal. By the time it goes in effect, you'll probably be 18 anyway :)

Since the law is designed to target kids who should be in jr. high and high school, your best bet is to keep some documentation with you that shows you are in college. I'm sure if you ever were stopped, that would be enough to satisfy them.

That's a good law imho.....and I've never seen such laws enacted without exceptions. To school or to work should be included but since you have not posted the actual wording and the article was very brief, who knows?

.....voted late last night to approve a controversial daytime curfew for students.

You notice it says for students. Without the exact wording on the bill I can't tell you more, but it seems to me that as long as you have some sort of college id you'd be fine.

My guess is it will be relatively easy to avoid running afoul of the law.

I've been working full time since I was 16 (I was working graveyard when I was 16), I've never attended a day of HS, & I have never had any trouble.

Just stick to your normal routine, even if you DO get ticketed/arrested?/whatever it will be relatively simple to prove you have every right to be out.

i think you are missing something here. Since you already graduated HS and now in college, I think you no longer fit in that category of being watched and having the curfew applied. If you simply describe your daily routine to the cop or whoever tries to ticket you, i'm sure they'll be reasonably. In fact, they have to be, a simple curfew can't paralize you just because of your age at this point in time of your life. if and when you do get a ticket, simply fight. I dont see the big deal in all this. simple confusion, simple solution

danny~!

two words: look older

i'm sure if you are acting responsibly and dont look like a complete idiot/hs dropout (excessivley baggy jeans, baseball cap worn backwards, etc.... stereotypical "youth") walking down the street, you wont get nailed

have a library card/student id at your college? if you get nailed...i'm on my way to/coming back from a study session @ skool

I would love to see the forms pass a law stating that you must be 18years old to post here

Your still a minor according to the law.
Why do you expect to be treated any different?
It is just sad these days that the government has to play the role of a parent.
It sould be your folks placing that rule on you not the government.
But I guess in Fresno...None of the parents moderate their kids so the law must.

Sorry, mod. Got a little carried away in anger...

I suppose it isn't big deal when it comes down to it, but it's the concept still. Yes there are dirtbag kids out there skipping school and crap; but they will just hang around in their house or back alleys or something where cops don't go often. My legal activities are being affected because of a few losers. Now where in the constitution does it say that I only get liberties when I'm over 18?

How have your legal activities been affected? They haven't have they?
