We're not just talking about the polygons here. IMO Oblivion is WAY better than Far Cry or Doom3 because it has an absolutely awesome story. FINALLY, a truly legendary game comes out, and I can't run it without it looking like sh!t. A large part of Oblivion relies on immersion and realism, and while without these it's still an amazing game... without the eye candy to create that immersion a large part of the game's awesomeness if gone.

You better have 2gb of memory to go with it.

I have an XP 2700+ and a 9700pro. I dont see why people are so obessed with upgrading. o no, this new games coming out and itll only be able to run on the newest top of the line computers i better upgrade by GF 7900gtx and A64 4000+

yea pc gaming is probably more expensive than console gaming, but its not as expensive as 90% of people make it out to be. You dont need to upgrade every 6 months...

Oh and regarding that... well, my friend multitasks Runescape, Deus Ex, and sometimes the Unreal engine all at once on a PIII 800Mhz. It runs like hell but it still works.

I don't want to "run like hell." If all I played were old games like the ones you mentioned, I wouldn't be wanting this upgrade.

I'm just sick and tired of my computer being completely bogged down at 100% CPU utilization for half an hour as I do my image processing tasks...

What kind of image processing do you do?

I just recently upgraded from my inspiron 9300 with a 2GHz P-M, 6800 NU, 1.25GB RAM, 80GB HD to the system in my sig (Athlon64 3700+ san diego, X1900XT, 2GB RAM, 250GB SATA2 HD). Odds are, I won't be upgrading for a long time. The computer before the laptop I had for more than a year (some minor parts changed, nothing that affected performance much though). I had the Inspiron for 8 months. I don't see an upgrade for a long time, except maybe a sound card over the onboard and better speakers. Keyboard here probably pretty soon but that isn't really an upgrade - just one of those things that starts to wear out

I don't fancy myself a computer expert, but why did you have to spend close to a grand on an 'upgrade' ? For a decent mid-range system you're not so much upgrading as replacing (and you might as well build a new system while you're at it).

Just curious, why an opteron instead of a dual-core? And do you have at least 1-2 GB of RAM ?

I'm just saying that a 3000+ really shouldn't be so bad when it comes to multitasking if a PIII can do it. FEAR and Far Cry are old games? Those are probably the two best looking games out, aside from maybe Half-Life II (which also runs great, btw).

You're confusing true multitasking with task switching. Any 32-bit desktop CPU back to the 386 can switch tasks; that's more a reflection of the quality of the OS than anything else.
