I feel for you, Ive lost numerous amouts of data just because of the simple fact of *forgetting* about it.

:wine: for ya

but like I said when you get say a roll of pictures on your pc, webshots has a program you can download, fire it up from desktop, login with your username/pass and it shows you all your albums and what pics you have in each album, its really really EASY once you download the program, you can upload multiple pics/images at the same time rather than just waiting for each individual pic to load like if you did it using IE(internet explorer)

its free too:)

Never let anyone touch your computer muchlesss work on it.

Always back stuff up when you are going to be doing anything with the hard drives.

That being said, check the recycle bin, install an undelete program and cross your fingers.

get teh trial version of Norton utilities and undelete it. Simple.
Do these actually work ? Never had to, but would like to know in case I had to.

Yeah, undelete programs work.

they wok because your computer doesnt delete stuff. In simple terms it hides it, and tags it to be ver written. Files dont get ovewritten that fast, so the files that you delete are still there.

I think you can do this through DOS, or at least you used to.
Yeah!
You use to beable to do: undelete c:\*.* /all

I have had uses that tell me they don't need anything other than their emails & my document folder, and it never is that way. Therefore I now backup everything after hearing complaints from the first few of how I lost their files.

You should have been there with your mom bf to tell him exactly what you want & need to be save, because he is not a mind reader. And, you should be grateful for what he did, because he did it for free.

restrict access to that folder. If you're not the local administrator, build your own computer and restrict access to that folder.

You really can't blame this on your mom's boyfriend. I admit it would be nice to not have to blame yourself, but suck it up and deal. You didn't back up, it's really your fault the data gone. When you transferred the data from one computer to another that was the opportunity to back it up. Why would you transfer so much important info without putting it on CD? You would've killed two birds with one stone.

I'm sure this has already been said.

To bad for you, I know how not having pictures of your past is, due to my nomadic lifestyle, I ended up at 22 with a rather small box of posessions that holds everything from my past I've kept. Sometimes I regret it, but it was my choice after all.

Caitlin,

If this just happened then there's no way that all the photos are gone (I've brought back items that were deleted months and months ago). Try not doing anything else on the computer until you use some more recovery tools. Check Cnet and see if they have any recommendations for a good utility.

As for your mom's boyfriend...bake him some chocolate chip cookies with exlax as a peace offereing. ;)

Wait a minute....I may have missed this but what operating system is on the PC? If it's WinMe or WinXP you very well may be able to get your files back if system restore is active. I'm a little confused where these files were lost from, but if they were nuked from a PC with an existing OS then you might get lucky.

Edit:

I haven't used system restore all that much, but I believe it can roll back the PC to the way it was on a certain date so providing it took a complete snapshot of the PC then it may work.

Go to Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore. Once you're there you should have 2 choices: Restore My computer to an earlier time and Create a restore point....you would obviously want the first choice. From then on it should be fairly easy to follow along with the wizard.

Doesn't that just restore the registry and Windows system DLLs?
