I think it is that people always try to contradict, disagree, or set themselves apart from whatever is
being discussed. Dissent has its place, however gratuity is the game here. If they sense that the opposite response is expected, they will reply opposite that. It's the same thing that drives the "fit in by not fitting in" crowd.
