I found out what Face Time is used for.

A damn good baby monitor.

I shoved the iPod in the couch, and FT'd the iPad.. Now I have a "Free" Audio/Visual baby monitor.

Too bad my kids are past the baby monitor age.

Now, when my daughter gets into her teens, I may need a spy cam 😉

i was expecting the thread to be about teens mis-using facetime for perverted reasons 🙂

The baby monitor idea is great !

But... how do you then use the iPad?

Press home button> goes to home screen, click on green bar and it'll go back to face time, just like a phone call on the iPhone. I believe it will pause video but you can still get audio..(I think).

Finally! I can go to the track and let technology watch the kid.
If this works out, I won't have to interact with the kid(s) till they go off to college. 😀

Yeah, but then doesn't that ruin the purpose of a monitor? If you just needed audio, those baby monitors are dirt cheap.

I know you can look at this like a 'Bonus Feature' but it seems awfully unpractical.

But hey, if it works for you then . I'm not one to judge. It just wouldn't work for me because I'd want to do stuff on my iPad.

It's exactly how you'd use any baby monitor. We have a dedicated IP baby monitor (video/audio/motion) and we use it when we put our newborn son down for a nap or to sleep at night. I can look in on him from any computer I'm using, or a dedicated baby monitor- but it's not like we just stare at the monitor all the time. It's just to check up now and then to make sure everything is okay if we're in another room, It's a peace of mind sort of thing most of the time.

Speaking for myself, I've learned that I'd get a lot less use out of an iPad or anything else if I'm jumping up every few minutes to run to another room to check on my son, so the logic here seems to me exactly in reverse. This is a great idea, and practically speaking for a parent, he'll probably get to use the iPad a lot more than if he didn't have it set up as a monitor 'cause he'd have to put it down and go check physically a lot more.

setup&

-Its pretty much still the same except work upgraded our iPads to 2's. (This is my Home setup)

I work as an IS programmer in the tech building of a public K12 district (All Apple 🙂). We have iPads so that we can spot check the web apps that we write for iPad compatibility and overall usage.

But as you can see.. I can use the iPad and be able to focus on work and not be getting up every 5-10mins to LOOK at the baby, when I can just take glance for a piece of mind.

I rarely actually use the iPad for more than 5-10mins at a time unless I'm using it to listen to some podcast or view a screen cast. Much prefer a full computer vs gimped software, but that argument doesn't belong in this thread.

Isn't that the truth. We're also looking into IP Camera solutions for the same reason (unplug and move it where ever, with wifi).. an RTSP stream in VLC is pure win, but we haven't been able to find any decent cams that officially say they have audio over RTSP. We have no windows machines and most cams want you to use IE for an ActiveX control that streams audio. So this is pretty much the next best thing.

Hey, I'm not trying to knock it. Like I said, if it works for you then great! Don't paint me as the Negative Nancy around here 😉.

All I was saying is that, for most people, an $80 video baby monitor is a lot more practical.
