When police showed up to Destinee Miller’s house Monday, she wasn’t at home caring for her three young children as they played outside, but her absence was just the tip of the iceberg.

Miller, 25, has been charged with three counts of child endangerment, four counts of animal neglect and one count of neglect or abandonment of a dependent. She was released from Polk County Jail in Des Moines Tuesday on bond of over $12,000 after police described finding her three children in the filthiest of conditions.

Her 4-year-old son told police he was trying to make breakfast for his sister, 2, and brother, 1. He reportedly said the oven made a noise that scared him, so he brought his brother and sister outside.

Police told KCCI-TV the 2-year-old was “naked and covered in feces from head to toe.” The baby boy reportedly had a full diaper, and the oven was still on and hot as the children played outside.

Impressive, how did he reach the oven controls? Probably lucky the thing wasn't a gas oven (I'm assuming).

Hauling the kids outside due to strange noises probably already makes him more responsible than the mother, 'Destinee' (wonder where she got her poor parenting habits from).

Sadly kids tend to grow up very quickly when they don't have a choice.

I wonder what drugs she's on? (You can be a pretty bad parent, but ignoring piles of feces on the floor in your fucking house probably means you have more "pressing" needs.)

Yesterday our code enforcement team was called out to a murder scene that took place that morning because people on property were living in 5th wheels which is a no no. There was a mobile home also where a renter lived. Part of the home was burned down, the home was pretty much on stilts with no electricity, and barely functioning plumbing. The renter told us they used generators for electricity and had to fill their toilet tanks with hose water to flush. There was solid waste issues, and the people living in the 5th wheels were just emptying their black tanks right there beneath the trailer. Not sure if kids lived there, but unfortunately we see stuff like this all the time out here (not the murder).

Yeah, but it's shit like this as to why I can't leave a 8 - 14 year old at home alone while I go to grocery store for 20 minutes.

Not properly taking care of your children (food, clothing, sanitation, etc...) is one thing, it's another to say that you can't leave them for 5 minutes or the world blows up.

I've read about a similar incident recently, not sure if this is the same. Of a woman that went to Europe and left her kids behind.

I hope she's able to get her life together and at least get back to be there for them at some point. I mean, I just wish the best for all of them. These stories are always tragic and rarely end well for anyone once the states get involved...

I doubt having the state involved will do any more harm to these kids than their current situation. Just to be sure I googled "foster care covered in feces". Most of the stories were about how the biological parents sucked and the children were removed to foster care.

Good foster parents are a literal lifeline for some. I suspect you have no idea what goes on in the state system.

Clearly, Des Moines, Iowa is the problem.

I heard there's a house here with this 11 year old boy that goes around sexually abusing and in some cases trying to kill (not strong enough to actually succeed) little girls. Someone caught the little kid trying to choke a 8 year old girl in a dumpster. (not sure if she ran away and hid there, or what) They brought him to his parents and they said "oh yeah he does that all the time" like it was no big deal. Not sure if that can be topped as far as dysfunctional homes. That kid should probably be in some kind of facility and so should the parents.

Apparently cops know about it but can't do anything because of age. I think that's messed up. There should be some kind of thing they can do for special case situations like this. This kid is obviously completely screwed up and does not belong in society. Imagine when he gets older.
