I found a good barber... finally

I recently moved to a new area and left my old barber of 10+ years who was about as good of a barber as I have experienced - which is why he got my business for so long. I tried several barbers in my new area and was disappointed by their service (or lack thereof) and became discouraged. So for the last little while I have been going to a salon (Great Clips) which has been only slighter better than the local barbers I have tried.

The people working at Great Clips seem to be incompetent and lack experience. Every hair cut I have had there was done by someone less than 25 years old (estimated) and there didn't seem to be any "old veterans" (men or women) in the shop to give pointers or just keep tabs on the young people - and it showed. The service was terrible, like waiting at the counter for 5-10 mins before anyone greets me and then waiting an indecent amount of time for a cut when there are employees idle at their stations - this wasn't a one time thing either, it was every visit. The cuts were always bad as well. It seems like most everyone there who gave me a cut used electric clippers almost the entire time and wasn't even with them.

Finally I'd had enough and pulled out the phone book to find somewhere new; this morning I went to a barber I hadn't tried yet just down the road from my house. The first thing I noticed was that the shop was busy and this was at 8:15 AM. That's a good sign. I was greeted right away and even though I was 4th in line for a cut I didn't wait more than 20 minutes. The cut looked great and thank God, I got a straight shave - the back of my neck was starting to look like the wolfman. This is something a salon simply won't do. It felt great. The barber did my neck first and I was so happy with the result I had him do my face as well. The cut looked great, the shave looked great, the price was reasonable ($10) and the people were friendly. Plus, there was no stupid perm smell to set off my allergies.

I am a happy man this morning! Now I can get back on my 2-week hair cut schedule. I think I might pop in every Saturday morning for a straight shave anyway.

I have a great barber I go to here in Nashville. Does my neck line just right with the straight blade.

You can't beat a real barber for a haircut.

Yeah, Great Clips does suck. There's no substitute for a good barber if you're a man. I go to a small local shop run by a Russian and a Palestinian guy. I get to hear political rants while getting a shave and a hot towel.

I found a good barber a while back myself.

I got tired of having the girls in the salons constantly change jobs, (I hate to "train" a new haircutter) so I decided to try to find a decent barber.

First try, I hit the jackpot.

The guy's been in business in the same location for about 20 years, and in the trade for over 30 years.

When I sat down, he asked what I wanted. I told him "High and tight...and just long enough on top so that it doesn't stand up."

"High and tight," he asked? I asked if he had been in the military, and he said yes.

"OK," I sez, "No whitewalls, use a 1-1/2 on the sides."

We both got a laugh out of that, because too many people in the haircutting biz have NO IDEA what "high and tight" actually means...

The guy is an excellent barber, does the neck shaving, around the ears, etc., and he's quick with the job.

I'm heading there this morning before class. I haven't been in for over a month, and I'm starting to look shaggy again. 😀

yeap. i used to go to a little barber that was hidden away. it was 3 old guys and one young kid (grandson of one. all were realated). they all did a great job. it was only $10. they used to do shave's too but the guy that did them died.

Now though my wife just uses the clippers on me and cuts it really short. now when my hair is over a inch it bugs mem.

I have one I try to go to whenever I can. They were about 5 minutes from my old house, but now I have to hit them omw home after work which sucks. They are great though, and its $12 for the haircut then add $3-4 to that for tip (depending on which barber I get).

Great clips is the same price, but the quality is about the same as that time I had sex with dNo... errr that never happened

I've been going to the same barber for 20 years. I love that I can go in and get greeted by my first name. He knows who I am and exactly how I want my hair cut. I'm out in 10 minutes. That's why I tip him $10 on a $10 haircut.

Im glad your happy, but I think I can still get a decent, affordable and professional haircut at PROCuts. Too bad I only get a haircut once every 5 months or so (to trim my 3 to 9 inch strands).

I've got a barber a block away from me who's great too. There are 3 old guys in there, straight shave, totally oldschool. It's great 🙂

I've had good luck at Great Clips. Stacey there is a cutey and does a good job every time.

It's not the company, it's the person that cuts the hair that matters.

I got to the point where I just shave my head in the shower, no more haircuts at all. Heck I don't know that there is a real old-school barber in the area anymore, especially one that can do a shave. Most everything I see is gum-popping twenty-somethings fresh out of cosmetology school that wanted $20 to take a set of clippers and a #1 guard to what little hair I had left on my head.

lol...I go to the same barber that cut my father-in-law's hair when he was little.

We all figure he'll be retiring soon... but until then good...cheap...haircuts. 🙂

I just see a black box with William H. Macy's hair.

He must have a good barber too. 🙂

Lucky both of you, then... I hardly have any hair, and not by choice! 🙁

Most of my life I've had short hair - very short. But back in late 2006 I decided to grow it out. Long hair sucks, but it makes you stand out if it looks somewhat decent. Wind makes it look like crap, youre frequently losing hair all over the place and picking it up from the shower, the sink, the floor and your own chest and arms. Then you have to shampoo carefully, comb it and redry it. Now comes bedtime and sleeping properly otherwise you will look like the crazy catwoman from the Simpsons and if you have to wet it down in the morning to get to work in a hurry everyone will now you screwed up. 😉

Ive since cut about half of it off but its still long compared to what I used to wear. I keep saying to myself Im going to shave it all off again but when I see people with very short hair now I find them mostly aesthetically displeasing.

Had a good barber in college. After that, I spent a few years taking clippers to my own head. Then I had a friend cut it. I moved and now I've been going to a salon. The lady who cuts my hair does a good job, but I miss the barber shop. The straight razor kinda freaked me out the first time, but he was good with it.
