System ..

XP
HD 80gigs

I used partition magic 7.0 to make two partitions. One partion for DOS and one partition for XP.

Windows XP is now lost and can only boot up to C-prompt with DOS directory.
Rescue disk shows C partition 3 gigs out of 80 with DOS being in that directory. The remaining hard drive is un-allocated.

I believe my entire Harddisk was formatted instead of the 3 gig partition. Can i bring back my XP due to important files stored on XP?
If yes, please post intructions/details on how to retrieve my files.

Thankyou for your time !

PS: Currently on friends PC : <

Reformat = bye bye data.. That's what the warning "ARE YOU SURE YOU WANT TO CONTINUE? ALL DATA WILL BE LOST" message means when you format.. although I bet you didn't see that using PM7.. Sorry man.

if it were really important data (read: expensive to replace), i'd check out a program called Lost and Found... i've never tried to use it after a format, but i guess if it were really that important, it'd be worth looking into (you always DO wonder why government agencies need to low-level format their drive 7 times before they can scrap them)

powerquest discontinued Lost & Found, so i searched around a bit -- this was about all i could find

Lost & Found works pretty good. I used it a while ago when I did the same thing! I borrowed it from a friend, and I was able to recover about 95% of the stuff I needed. You'll probally need another drive, temporarily, if it was more than 40% or so full. My suggestion, don't do ANYTHING to that drive, until you're ready to recover it!
Great idea for software, worked well in my one instance, but they probally sold the license to Data Recovery Houses, for fear of competition! << Speculation

BTW, like was said above, powerquest stopped making/developing/supporting Lost and Found in October, I think. But before that they made it free for download. I snatched a copy and they provided a license for everyone, so if you can't find it let me know and I'll make it available to you.

Dear Musixian,

Could you pls send it to me also, as I have a similar problem aswell. I tried to backup my data to another HDD eith Ghost, but... yes I started to copy from the NEW drive to the old one. I stopped after 1%, but now I cannot acces the disk. Maybe this program could help?

Thanks in advance

I also grabbed it up when PQ made it available. LMK if musixian can't get it to you, and I can email it.....probably not until Thurs or Fri tho.

musixian--is it two zipped files? One about 500k and and the other about 700k? I'm just going by memory. And, I think it is version 1.01?

Hey count me in too. I can Pay-Pal a few bucks to whoever can do it for me. Ironically, I formatted the Drive it was stored on. It was the ONLY thing I didn't back up!

Since everyone else is asking, I might as well too. My foulup was that I think I partially overwrote my Win98SE hard drive with a Tivo Linux image. Wonder if it can save me there...:(

Of course, my backup failed on me too - I just can't win for losing...:disgust:

I'm curious....how did it work for y'all? I've never had to use it, but a friend used it to recover almost everything after he mistakenly chose "Repair" instead of "Ignore" by Norton. and....he knew better.
