Hmm... Should I deface it before I send it back?

wtf is it?
A military award from the french government.

In which case (and from your wording it sounds like you have already decided to send it back), thats a personal decision you should make. I might suggest, however, that you just include a note, however long, about why you are sending it back. This gives them a better understanding of why you are sending it back (defaced or not).

BTW, what did you recieve it for?

It was a unit award. The unit I was stationed with in Germany won it during WWII.

Yes. It disgusts me to look at it. I don't want it contaminating my US awards. I had forgotten about it until some mentioned depleted uranium ammo and I opened an old box.

Send them a note with it. And maybe a pound or so of horse-sh!t ;). What other awards did you recieve?

On a side note, it feels like we are PMing each other, since we are the only two in this thread so far

Not too much. Army Service Ribbon, NCO Professional Development, 2 Army Achievement Medals, Good Conduct Medal and Overseas Service Ribbon. I was only in the active Army for 4 years. I did another 4 years in the reserve and didn't earn diddly.

That award was for WWII and was earned through spilled blood of your countrymen. Don't disrespect their efforts in that great crusade!!

That being said, the French can eat a big d!ck...

You are not alone! A Veteran in the St. Louis area did just that and it made the news for several days.

Is it just me or is this place full of immature, flag-waving jingoists? "waaah! France doesn't jump when US tells it to jump! Therefore France sucks!"

It has been established that France has economic ties with Iraq that are very deep. France was against Gulf1 until the day before the invasion.

They helped Saddam build a nuclear power plant and violate UN sanctions with their trade policies towards Iraq.

We don't call the Frogs for nothing!

If France was against the Gulf1, they could have blocked it with their Veto. But they didn't. They voted for the war. So it seems that you are incorrect.

US also did business with Saddam back when France sold them the nuclear plant, so you aren't any better.

I jsut find the whole "This French medal contaminates my american awards!" just plain idiotic.

EDIT:

Persian Gulf War or Gulf War,Jan.?Feb., 1991, armed conflict between Iraq and a coalition of 32 nations including the United States, Britain, Egypt, France, and Saudi Arabia.

Link

So it seems you are talking out of you ass.

Once again, the very simplistic reasoning of the anti-bush-war folks show their sheer idiocy. This subject has been beat to death many times.

No matter how many times the links and facts are discussed, you will find a way to twist and wiggle and equivocate.

What the hell are you talking about? French business with Saddam? You did business with him as well. French opposition of Gulf1? That was shown not to be true.

And the fact that some peope think that a french medal will "contaminate" his american awards shows the idiocy of the flag-waving jingoists.

He earned them all. That probably gives him a different perspective than you.

Here are few facts:

-He personally didn't earn the French award, his unit did

-Just because France doesn't kiss US's ass on the Iraq issue does not make the french scum. This may come as a shock to you, but the world is not US's playground where they can do whatever they want and everyone must always agree with them.

-Having a French medal (given to his unit for it's actions during WW2) does not "contaminate" the other awards

Hell, I bet that if the French did not give that award, the flag-guys (the ones with US flag as their avatar) would be whining how "ungrateful the Frencies are".

EDIT: And defacing that medal is just plain childish. That's REAL mature of you guys.

Just like a Europeeing to tell you what you can and cant do with the medal you earned in the US military, while you were saving their AS*ES no less. He has every right to place whatever value he sees fit on any of his awards. The fact that one from the governemt of France isn't worthy to proudly be added to his US medals is completely understandable in my book. Send it back, tell them why. Also let them know the next time they better fight harder and last longer, we're done bailing them out....

As a finn, I can say that US did not save our (finns) asses. Only ones who saved our asses were ourselves.

He has every right to place whatever value he sees fit on any of his awards.

Sure he does. But his rationalising of this issue is just wrong. "Hmmm, France disagrees with USA. Therefore I must deface and return this medal given to my unit by the French government". I really fail to see the reasoning. Other nations are not allowed to have differing opinions? If they do, you take them as some kind of personal insult? Damn, you must be really insecure bunch of people.

That is a "fact" only in your deranged mind.

The French lost to the most effective military force in the world. And while the germans defeated the French, they also mopped the floor with the british forces. They took on both the brits and the french and they defeated them. Yet somehow you think that the french should have been able to defeat Germany? Had US Army faced them at that time, the results would have been the same,

Hell, in 1944 the western allies fought against 30% of the Wehrmacht, and you still had hard time defeating them! The French faced about 80-90% of Wehrmacht, yet you make fun of their defeat.

But hey, don't let facts get in to the way of your half-assed opinions.

Look who's talking, you act is if the Finn's defeated Hitler by yourselves, keep deluding yourself that you wouldn't be under German rule without US intervention. BTW the Germans were not the most effective military in the world, the US was, notice who succesfully fought on two fronts in WW2.

How do you get off suggesting his reasoning is wrong? It is his opinion. Nobody else seems to have ANY problem with him doing what he wants with his medal, why do YOU? Talk about insecure, lol.
My mind is deranged? At least i'm not so consumed with envy towards another country I can't stand to hear or say anything good about them, but at the same time I can't ignore them either. The rest of the world watches the US, while we watch TV. You know why we don't know or care much about Europe or the rest of the world? WE DON"T CARE, you are irrelevant.

As far as the French, they attack our efforts based on moral reasoning and lack of support (more countires supporting now than in 1991) and blast us everyday in the media. Maybe the fact that they violated the same resoltuions they signed and provided illegal arms to Iraq (mirage parts) and made deals for oil to go into effect after sanctions stopped clouded our opinion. Perhaps it was the 4 billion still owed the French that wouldn't be paid if Saddam was removed? Maybe the hypocrisy of their position has created a little disgust for their obvious lack of principle. Nothing from the French governemnt is worthy enough to be placed among truly honorable US awards.
