I forgot how time consuming it is to build a new computer

I'm going to wait until next year for the 2nd generation Core i3/i5 processors. The 1st generation chips aren't much faster than the Core 2 Duo system that I already have.

It doesn't take that long to build a PC... about an hour to unpack all the parts and put them together, and another hour to install the OS and drivers.

I'd like to upgrade my PC, but I actually need to use it right now!

The research is fun but time consuming. The building is probably pretty quick if you don't overclock, but frankly I think I'm not going to bother overclocking next time. It'll cost me some on the cpu, but the amount of testing I do to be comfortable just isn't worth it. Plus, it seems like with intel at least they're just more and more hostile.

Actually, I just don't give much of a shit about PC hardware as I used too I guess.

OP, do you have a Frys or Microcenter nearby? You can generally find pretty good processor/motherboard combos from them; I bought my quad core athlon with a 785g matx asus mobo ~6 months ago from MC for around $125.

A positive for you is ddr3 prices have been dropping. I'm seeing more and more deals for 2x2gb in the $50-65 range, whereas you used to be lucky to find a pair for $80. Keep an eye out here on hot deals and at deal sites like slick deals. If you're patient and flexible you can save yourself some moolah.

Fry's isn't bad but Newegg.com generally has better prices. I remember going into Fry's years ago and asking if they had Lian-Li cases...the guy had never even heard of them.

sometimes the chip and motherboard combos are phenomenal. that's been my last 4 processors.

I haven't built one for myself in a while, but I occasionally get asked by friends and family members to build one. The last one I built took a while to spec out, and ended up costing more than if I had just bought a system from Dell, even with cheaper and lower spec parts. And if they have issues, I'm the first person they call. I've been suggesting buying full computers since and the calls have decreased a bit.

I've had laptops for the last few years, so much easier. They are more than enough for what I use them for, even my games play at full settings. I'm not stuck always sitting at a desk, and I can bring it with me. I've replaced practically every part on laptops over the years, so they aren't overly expensive to repair. The only thing I miss is being able to upgrade specific components, which can only be done to a certain extent with a laptop.
