i followed the rpm instructions for KDE3 instal... now what?

Shouldn't have to reboot.
What runlevel did you install from. I did a telinit 3 to drop out of gui to install it. Do a telinit 5, login, there it is 🙂
If you did it from withing KDE (is that possible?) try just logging out and logging back in again.
 
lol, wow.. i feel dumb. =\

ok.. i got it up and running, but i cant configure anything, all the options are gone. the control center also has NO options. my K start menu has no entries, whats up with that? =P
 
Huh, that's wierd. It preserved all my stuff when I did the upgrade.
Are you getting any error messages, or is it just not there?
