I finally found a rehost of that 2001 Bose article.

i remember reading that back in the day.

thankfully i have talked several people out of getting that junk. one friend got one before i could talk to him. man oh man what junk. lord of the rings sounded horrible. all distortion during action scenes. and bagpipe music... unlistenable. but the wife loved it..

ps i run pro sound for some local bands. so people actually listened to me.

Some of Bose's newer models aren't that bad. I love my Bose Soundlink Color Bluetooth, and the SoundTouch 10 sounds great as well.

The Acoustimass though... blargh

Back when I was younger and before I had any money to enjoy quality audio equipment; I had a friend who's Dad bought the new Acoustimass 10 system. To my ears back then it simply sounded amazing. I had never heard a 5.1 system before then and it just sounded so rich to me. I know better now but to a poor punk ass kid they were special. It wasn't until I was in my twenties that I realized more could be had for the money.

So, if Bose sucks bad, what would be a good 5.1 or 7.1 speaker system? Or brand? Budget or money doesn't matter.

I have some old Bose and some old Cambridge Soundworks speakers right now, but would love to know what is considered a good speaker brand or system.

Thanks.

Head over to avsforum and do some reading. Stay away from the Home Theater in a Box systems. Get a good quality AVR (Denon, Yamaha, Onkyo). Im getting ready to pull the trigger on this Yamaha: https://www.amazon.com/Yamaha-RX-V6...ie=UTF8&qid=1497990469&sr=1-1&keywords=rx+683
