I caved and got the 60gb ps3 before they ran out also.
Currently own a PS1, was looking for an upgrade.
Had several choices:
1) 40GB - $399
2) 60GB - $499
3) 80GB - $499
Decided not to get the 80GB because I don't care for the bundled Motorstorm game and the PS2 software emulation limits the backward compatibility.
Decided on the 60GB vs the 40GB because PS2 games are quite a bit cheaper than PS3 games and I wanted to have the PS2 backward compatibility by hardware method. Plus, the extra USB ports (4 on 60GB vs 2 on 40GB) would be nice since I was going to need the ports for charging, my Logitech wireless keyboard and my Logitech GT4 steering wheel.
My primary reason for getting a PS3 was for blu-ray playback, followed by the occasional PS3 gaming and the rare PS1/PS2 gameplay.
Best buy has a 60GB bundle for $499.99 with free controller and free game (choose from 2), didn't want an extra controller now because I'd rather get a Dualshock3 controller when they come out next year to regain the rumble feature and I didn't like their game selections.
Walmart.com also has a 60GB bundle for $499.82 which gives you a free blu-ray remote and a free game (more selections, I picked RFOM but there are several nice games to choose from, better than Best Buy's choices). Have to pay shipping but still worked out to be the best deal for me. I paid $542.78 after tax and shipping. After some cash back offers, I'm expecting it to cost me just under $518.
Need to get the 5 blu-ray movies by mail-in also.
Best setup for me. I want to download the demos of the PSN and try them out. I have a blu-ray remote now to watch movies and I have Netflix so I can rent Blu-ray movies easily. Will get a Dualshock3 later when they come out so at least one controller will have rumble.
