Told my self when 16x dvd burners are cheap I'd upgrade from my 4x. So finally order it from the egg today. Anyone have any experience with the quircks of this one especially in terms of media?

mine should be coming in on tuesday. try looking for the thread where they post an alternate bios flash to unlock dvd rip speeds and such ..

I have one they are great. Partiiculary if upgrade the firmware to the 3500ag 2.5 thingy. improves media compatability and burn speeds.

has anyone d/led the 2.7 firmware? the drive i bought came with 2.6 but i'm scared to "upgrade" it will all the warnings and agreement licenses they issue before d/ling. plus, i dont even know what version 2.7 offers... if it's faster speed or what.

Been planning to hold on til bluerays, but the trigger finger is getting itchier.

Heh. I was gonna hold out too but they got so cheap so fast and CD's were seeming increasingly small and slow. The equivalent of six CD's in 6-7 minutes plus less swapping and labelling and organizing and all that crap is a boon, a boon I say.

Stick with media recommended by the drive manufacturer to reduce hassles, otherwise you can't really go far wrong with Taiyo Yuden, Mitsubishi Kagaku, Ricoh and Hitachi Maxell. Sometimes the trick is in finding which brands and particular stock are which media manufacturer.

Good sites are cdrinfo, cdrlabs, videohelp and cdfreaks.org

Does anyone know about this or what this is? I have no idea where to start atm since I'm not sure I understand what Sid is saying. Thanks.

I missed mentioning one of the usual recommended sites, to wit: rpc1.org which is apropos to above post, idem est, unlocking. 😉

all you need to know is here.

stock firmware is 2.16

current official firmware is 2.18.

u can also download a "hacked" firmware base on 2.18 that has RPC1 (region free), SL and DL bitsetting (for DVD+R, increases DVD player compatibility), and riplock remove.

there's also an official IODATA (nec 3500 oem) 2.28, base on 2.18 with the latest writing strategies, that supports SL bitsetting.

be aware though, flashing your NEC 3500A's firmware will void your warranty.

i have one, and cdfreaks is the place to get advice on it. I put in one of the firmwares that kills the riplock and auto bitsets SL media to -ROM, and it's been great without any coasters in the 25 or so disks i've done.
