Many people swear by Win2k, and there must be a reason why..

You would never be able to run a Linux box ;)

That is quite true! Win 2000 is one of the easiest OS to install and to use.

All right brainiacs explain why I keep getting an error every time time I try to connect to the internet when the operating system tells me my hardware and software is working perfectly and it suggests that I have a W95CD ready. " Remote Access Service" error is wht I get. Never had any problems at all with W98SE. I followed everything to a "T" and it is screwed up. BTW people who trash talk on the internet make me laugh!

I have stopped liking WIN2000 too. It normally runs great and smooth, but when I do have an problem, it's a disaster. I bought a MSI 694D 2 cpu motherboard and installed it. Got it working for a few weeks then intalled a upated video driver from Matrox. Upon reboot it had a stop error and rebooted again. Again, and again, and again, etc. I tried safe mode, vga mode, last known good, everything. Then I booted off of the CD and tried recover, repair, everything. I had to reinstal the whole damn OS! All for a video driver?
I've been on WIN2K for 6 months and I have reinstalled my OS 4 times! Most recently last week. I thought I finally had it rock stable, I was going to use a Adaptech backup program to burn a CD of my system for an easy restoration. IT DOESN"T WORK WITH WIN2000!
Yesterday I come home and turn on the PC. It begins to load, but just when the progress indicator bar reaches the end, a blue screen stop error flashes on and then it reboots. It is so fast I cannot even read it. I tried all the steps to save it again but nothing works except a complete reformat and reinstall. AGAIN! Win 98 wasn't great, but I could usually figure a way to boot up to check things out.

GOOD LUCK!

It's funny how sad people are always willing to rip on other people when they have a problem rather than help them. It's just too bad that there are more sad people than helpful ones 8-(

Can you send me a copy of you application and system event logs? There may be information in them that would pin point the exact problem. Or if you do feel comfortable sending them to me, then at the least take a look, maybe you see something that is obviously broken.

Incase you don't know where to grab them:
  1. Right Click on my computer and choose "Manage"
    Expand "System Tools"
    Expand "Event Viewer"
Right Click on "Application" and choose "Save log file as..."
Right Click on "System" and choose "Save log file as..."
You can e-mail them to me

Win2k rocks in the hands of an experienced user...

I personally never used a more stable OS

Hmmm. If Win2k works fine for you, then great! I had it installed (dual boot w/Win98SE) and everything ran smooth until I tried to install drivers for soundcard & TV Tuner. I found that if Win2k doesn't like a particular piece of hardware, in can be a real pain in the a$$. It is a very stable and easy to use OS, but I wouldn't say it's for everybody.....

I am an experienced user. I have set up many machines beginning back with DOS 5.0 then WIN3.1, etc. I am not inept. I set up WIN2000 and loved it. Stable, nice interface, I could burn CD and print and the same time. Only problem is what happened Friday, and other times. Without warning I get a stop error and it won't boot. None of the recovery efforts would work. I have to reinstall. What would you guys do in this case?
And I'm still sick of things that don't work with WIN2000.
Maybe it's a SMP issue? How many of you who haven't had problems use 2 processors? Maybe I should try again when my Athlon gets here?

Thanks

MIKE

I personally run a Bp6 rig with dual 366's @ 500, and it's rock solid.
I dont leave it running all night, but I wouldn't be afraid to run it for months if my PS wasn't junk.

Sounds like user error to me. I'm not saying I am a computer God by any means, but if I can install Win2k with no problems, there must be a problem.

Use imaging software, and make a new image of your OS partition when you make significant changes.

Speaking of which, does Ghost 2001 work with NTFS volumes?

There are a lot of problems with driver compatibility. After many Win2K setups for clients I have found that if I load it with all the cards in place, it will install drivers that won't crash the system. No need to upgrade them...if it works, leave it. Just recently I installed the latest Detonator 3 drivers for a TNT2 off Nvidias site, which promptly caused my system to lock and keep crashing. Reinstalled the 6.34 and all was well. Same thing with with Verizon's WinPoet software for a DSL connection. Switched to RASPPPOE and all the problems went away.

Just take your time and upgrade or change them one at a time. Also once it running without conflicts, make an image to fall back on. Ghost 2001 will see and image NTFS.

Will never go back to Win98.......

Yes it works but only in real DOS. you have to boot to dos with a win 98 boot disk and then you can use Ghost. It won't work in win2k but it's ok in win 98/Me. I always ghost my Os partitions after i install something that doesn't create a problem. :)

OK nitrousninja!!!!!
What's with ppl that get mad because something doesn't work properly???
I guess it's a sign of immaturity, instead of trying to fix a problem you just get ma d and diss whatever doesn't work!
Take e few DEEP breaths and then post your problem in a thread , You'll get a lot more problem-solving replies!! Most evreione on these forums are very helpfull and extremely competent. A littl composure goes a long way
