I figured out why I don't like rap music.

Here's the genre-free version of what I wrote: You can't claim that Genre-X doesn't suck if 95% of it is utter garbage and only 5% of it is tolerable. That 5% is only what YOU listen to, not the rest of the halfwits that claim to be fans of the genre. The 95% is what makes the genre, not your 5%.

Now change "Genre-X" to be rap, hip hop, R&B, blues, all of it.

Rap is one of those genres where 95% is mindless LOOKITMEEGIMMEMONEYINSULTINSULTI'MBETTERTHANYOU over and over and over. You can't ignore it, that's what it has become.

I've only heard one Kesha song, no need to hear the rest. I've never heard a Justin Bieber song. Taylor Swift, I would marry and blissfully listen to her garbage all day long if it meant I'd be hitting that. Katie Perry I'd give my left nut to bang and I actually like her music.

What was the point of asking about those?

I used to. Additionally, some of my collection involves rap and hip hop from back in the day when they weren't sad, sorry excuses for bilking money out of caveman-like customers.

Well I do prefer the older stuff as well, and that is mainly what I listen to, but there are quite a few talented guys out there these days that do not fall into the stereotypes you mentioned above.

You just have an irrational hatred for rap and have no interest in actually listening to it. That's my point.

Truthfully, you're missing out on some of the better music of the last decade, but you don't care, nor are you going to care so the only question left is why are bothering to make bold sweeping statements that are true for 95% of music out there? You said it yourself, most music in most genres is crap.

In other genres you seem perfectly willing to get past most of it to find the good stuff, but you refuse to even recognize that there is anything redeeming about rap.

Your point is wrong, considering that I said in this very thread that I do still actively listen to rap.

The last decade? Even if it were to have gotten better, which it hasn't, this is still what it would look like:

Where did I say that? Please quote me.

Where in this thread have I described my opinion of any genre other than rap/hiphop? Please quote me.

But, since I know you can't, stop putting words in my mouth. 🙂

Hell yes, that was the start of a beautiful genre 😎

While old school rap is ok b/c of nostalgia, it's like comparing DOS 8 bit to Windows 7 64. It paved the way for today's rap but no way in hell am I getting more entertainment out of something I liked as a child vs today's computing. And in all honesty, almost any child could have sung Rapper's Delight. Most children aren't going easily emulating say, the Roots playing live music, Canibus's 200bar songs without a chorus, or let alone writing a poetic song using modern day slang/wordplay (Nas, Cormega, Ghostface, Eminem, Immortal Technique, Black Thought, Tabli Kweli, Pharaohe Monch, MF Doom, Lupe, Atmosphere/Slug, Eyedea and Abilities). Complexity is a sign of intelligence and Rapper's Delight is simply reserved for clubs during "Old School Night" or weddings; not for making you think about modern issues such as politics, poverty, rules of the street like The Wire, violence, positivity, spirituality etc.
