One of the local morning radio shows that I listen to every morning, which starts at 6am which oddly enough is when my alarm goes off. anyway, they ended up talking about super computers cause Bill Gates was at a conference in Seattle promoting MS's newest sc software. The dj and cohost, named DJ No Name and Jennifer White, were trying to figure out what super computers were and no one was giving them a great definition. Once things quieted down at work I sent them this email:

DJ No Name, Jennifer White I'd first like to say that I love your show and listen to it every morning. This morning I heard you guys discussing super computers and would like to shed some light on this subject if I can.
A
super computer is basically a mainframe computer. A mainframe computer is a large, room size, sometimes even house sized, computer that can process large amounts of requests in a very, very short period of time. They are not built for gaming but yes you can play games on them, you could run Battlefield 2 (with a proper video card installed) 10 times simultaneously and still have enough power to control 300 computer requests, basically the size of a small to medium company. Hope this helps you out. If you need any more information don't hesitate to write.

My first reply, from DJ No Name:

thank you mathew--with your wisdom, i now get supercomputers.

your pal, dj w. noname

The second reply, from Jennifer:

Whoa. Thank you for the most concise explanation yet! As you heard, we were struggling with the concept all morning!

I appreciate the info,

Jen

I now don the uber geek hat.

i sent an email once to the Heidy frosty and frank show. I told them that I hated her cackle and wished I could punch her in the face. 🙂

gee, i bet they asked you to be a live studio guest! fun! 🙂

Your definition of a supercomputer is more of a server or server farms. And i'll certainly like to see a supercomputer that can run 10 copies of BF2 (hell, i'll be impressed with 1 copy).

lol.. where did you get that definition from. hahahah... I hope you were joking.
let's hear it smartypants.

yep... I wouldn't know where to begin. Mainframe==supercomputer?! Where did that come from?? Running Windows, let alone Battlefield 2, on one of these would be close to impossible unless MS actually created a Windows for supercomputers. Its not like you can plug in an off the shelf video card and pop in a Battlefield 2 CD and it would run.

Now in fairness to the OP, he was trying to simplify what a supercomputer was but he is way off the mark.

LOL - congrats on your replies.

Too bad your definition was... both vague and wrong. 😀

You did describe a mainframe computer accurately.

A supercomputer has less to do with storage capacity and concurrent sessions, and more to do with physical speed and amount of mathematical calculations it can accomplish in a given time. Also, supercomputers aren't necessarily spread out like a mainframe, they can be quite small. They typically employ the use of supercooled, superconductive channels.

For examples -

Mainframe = used at a corporate headquarters or university's datacenter.

Supercomputer = used a science lab to process DNA sequences, or to model complex chemical reactions at the atomic level.

Yes.

And to all the rest, I know my explanation wasn't that great. But it was better than what they had and it made it simple

Yes I know it won't run BF2 even once, but if you get the idea of something that can run something multiple times simultaneously then you get the idea of its power and speed. These are simple people we are talking about, even the general laymen's terms are lost on them at times. Especially in the computer world. I do hope that they can get Bill on their show though, that would be a hoot to listen to.

Do you think they can grasp Battlefield 2 running 10 times simultaneously? Do they even know what BF2 is? 😕

I don't know what's nerdier, the fact that you emailed a radio station to explain what a supercomputer is, or the people in this thread who feel compelled to correct your definition. 😛

LOL -exactly. I think the OP is trying to fill CasioTech's vacancy in the forum. 😉
