I feel sort of stupid but... my cpu won't fit in my motherboard?

Ok so I got my parts today. Unwrapped CPU and motherboard. Unpopped the CPU tray, put the CPU in, and.... the flap won't go down. What the hell?

The first logical step for us to able to help you would be to at LEAST tell us what CPU and Mobo you just got... right?

There are two notches in the cpu. If properly aligned with the socket, you will have to use a little pressure to latch the bar.

Believe me, they're properly aligned. It's obvious there's only one way to put it into the socket, and thats how it its in.

Wow, that video makes it look SO EASY to push in those push-pins. Especially with the mobo already installed. Personally, I would install only with the mobo out of the case, to make certain that the push-pins are correctly seated.

No the pins are fine, so are the contacts on the CPU. I've followed that video to the letter now, and the CPU is in and the flap is down. It just felt like I VIOLATED the poor thing. I heard a crunching noise when pushing the lever down.

The "flap" part will not go down all the way on its own, but will stick up at around a 10-30º angle. Any more than that and the CPU is not seated all the way. The lever presses the flap all the way down and locks it into place.

Ok, so the stock HSF that comes with the e8600, the stuff thats on it is pre-applied heatpaste right? So I don't need any of my own?

Thermal paste, Correct. No need to apply your own. Just make sure you seat the HS correctly as they are the "push pin" type. They sometimes ( ok, all the time ) can be a pain in the ass.

I'm asking because in the videos you've got this nice square block of paste. On mine I have what looks like three thick strips of paste, rather than one square block.

Usually at stock, it comes with it. But when you by an after market it generally doesn't come with it and you have to apply yourself. So, since it has it already prepaired for you, use it. Again, make damn sure you seat the HS correctly. use a cross application on the Push pins. Make sure they are completely pushed through the motherboard.

Think of an X. Push one in then diagonally push the next and so on.

Hrm, I tried doing cross appliucation but it doesn't seem to work. Two are now in and the other two just won't 'pop'

Told ya, Pain in the ass. Ok, is your motherboard out of the case or in. It would be best if it were out and then you can see what is happining. Also, it takes some force to correctly install the sink. If it is installed properly, you should see the pins from the backside of the board and then you would know for sure it has been seeated.

Well the problem is I don't have a really good surface to put it on. I don't really want to put it on the desk as its a sort of crappy desk and will scratch easily. I suppose I'll put it in the case and push then?

Hold the mobo in your hand, pushing against the back part of it with one hand, and pushing in on the pin with the other hand. You can do it!

The pad that comes with a new motherboard as packaging works great for me, then I put it on my nice diningroom table, no damage, and a great seating !!!

The only True way is to have it removed and place it, as per the above comments by VirtualLarry and MArkFw. Putting it in the case will not do you any good. Yes, it will need to have a bit of force applied but THIS has to be done to achieve the proper placement. Take it nice and easy, don't stress use common sence.

Thanks for all the support guys, I got them in eventually. I didn't do any stress testing yet as I finished the build at 4AM and got up for work at 8AM, but its looking good.
