QUEBEC -- It was an, er, international incident. Anthem singer Caroline Marcil of Montreal, invited by Hockey Canada to sing the national anthem at the USA-Canada game here last night, made a forgettable night memorable.

Two lines into the Star Spangled Banner, she forgot the words.

"Sorry," she said.

Then she started to sing again.

Again, when she got to 'so proudly we hail' she stopped.

"Sorry," she said again.

Marcil then left the ice and quickly returned with a white piece of paper on which the words were written.

Stepping back on the ice, she did a Phil Esposito from the 1972 Canada-Russia series. Her feet went flying from under her and she landed in a two-cheek splat which reminded you of Jose Chouinard for Canada in figure skating.

Helped off the ice, no Team USA player stepped forward and offered to sing the song. So the game went anthemless. That was international incident 'A'. ...

O say, can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hail'd at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thro' the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watch'd, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof thro' the night that our flag was still there.
O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

Very good. Now sing O Canada.

You really can't make fun of her. At least she had the courage to go out there... 3 times...

she is canadian? and did not know the words to The star Spangled Banner? How many Americans know the words? And how many Americans know 1/2 the words to any other country's national anthem.

I'm not sure what you're trying to get at, but since she was a paid professional you would think she'd bother to memorize the lines to such a small song

I'm American and know (most of) the Canadian anthem.

Oh Canada! our true and native land.
true patriot love, to all our sons commend
with glowing hearts we see the rise the true north strong and free
from far and wide Oh Canada we stand on guard for thee
something something
oh canada we stand on guard for thee
oh canada! we stand on guard for thee!

well, maybe i'm a bit rusty but most of it's there.

 If they pulled someone from the audience 5 minutes beforehand and told them to sing the anthem then it's understandable that they didn't know the words. All she had to do was get a copy of hte lyrics a couple of days ahead of time and memorize them. It's almost as if she made an effort to forget the lines on purpose.

Being onstage had nothing to do with it I'm sure.

You must have all forgotten about the Mo Cheeks incident two years ago where an AMERICAN teenage girl forgot the words and he helped her along. She had just as much chance to practice as this singer I'm sure.

Cut her some slack, she's not even from our country.

Exactly. This isn't a "USA is better than Canada" jab, it's that she makes a living singing National Anthems. Hell if it was a USA resident that goofed on the Canadian National Anthem, we'd be taking shots at them too.

It's not exactly a long and complicated song to begin with for your average person to memorize, but when she probably had weeks notice that she was going to be singing, there is no excuse to fudge it up like that.

I think I can remember it.. I honestly am typing this off the top of my head

O say can you see
by the dawns early light
What so proudly we hailed
as the twilight last gleaming
--------I'm missing something here?
And the rockets red glare
The bombs bursting in air
Gave proof through the night
that our flag was still there
O say can you see
The banner wave
For the land of the free
and the home of the brave

But if I was going to sing it in front of an audience I think I could memorize it

Was that girl a professional anthem singer? I think not.

Her not being from this country has nothing to do with it. She, as a professional, was hired to do her job, and failed miserably at it. Simple as that. I'm sure she's had plenty of stage experience in front of huge crowds, unlike that American girl.

Just found out about it today. Looks like the booing made her blank out. I'm glad Good Morning America gave her a second chance. :)
