Dude you got to stop bashing yourself if you want to have a little fun in this life. Hell you can't take it with you.

If only I had your problems I wouldn't be in the world of hurt I'm in right now... count your blessings that you dont have an impulsive spending habbit as it's much worse to deal with...

wow, you have issues.... deep seeded issues from your childhood.

don't be afraid to spend money on yourself. just don't be frivolous.

You think unconstructive criticism will help him how again?

Then I looked at your negative user rating and it all made sense.

What Mosh said is probably true. And a child I had nothing really. I once went almost a whole school year having one shirt and one pair of pants. Neither fit me.
We had no money.

You have to give more info.

How old are you?
Are you married?
Have kids?
Saving for their education?
How much do you have in the bank?
What percentage of your net pay do you save every month?
Do you have retirement savings?

We need to know these things in order to be able to judge you better. 🙂

Everything I don't spend on bills. Probably 45-50%. Plus I do other things on the side that bring in money.
No

Well then. You are doing the right thing. Keep saving this much, but put it into a higher yield investment and within a couple of years you will be able to put a nice deposit down on a house.

Well I don't have 10k...lol. If I did I wouldn't be worried at all. I have plenty for me to get what I need to get done.

If you don't have up to 10K, then why are we even having this discussion? You're fine and have a reason not to spend much except when you must at the moment. Now, if you had 20K or something and had no intent to invest it in the stock market or real estate, then yeah we would have to have a serious discussion about your miserly nature.

I have plenty of money in the bank, and all my bills are paid. I go to work 5 days a week. I take care of my dogs. My car runs good. I have a few credit cards with high limits, and they are not being used.
But even so, every single time I ever think about spending money on myself, I feel horrible and selfish, like something might happen so I should keep it all just in case.
I won't buy things because I feel like I should horde all my money in the bank. It's becoming almost obsessive.

So when you see something you want, donate an equal amount to a worthy cause, then go buy that thing. Think of it as rewarding yourself for doing something nice for someone else.

Anyone else feel this way? I figure it's not normal but it's not a bad thing.

Saving 50% is excellent, but also excessive. It depends on your personality...whether you feel you are really depriving yourself. I probably save 25-30%. Also very good, but I could easily save 40-50%, but then, I'd feel like I was depriving myself in some way.

Moderation is the key. If you have a few K in the bank and youre thinking of buying a 5k computer...BAD IDEA. If youre thinking of getting sushi instead of mcdonalds every now and then, go for it.

I have my own personal strategy of spending that works good for me, but it depends on how well you can pull it off. I rarely ever buy anything major for myself, unless I can get a really, really good deal on it. Usually good enough that by the time I'm done using it, it will have depreciated in value to the point where I can resell it for what I paid for it. This requires patience to find a good deal, and a lack of impulsiveness.

For example: I managed to find a pretty slick deal on craigs list, for a 47inch HDTV for $800. I had been pondering buying one, but I bit as soon as I saw this deal come up. Ive had it for almost 2 years, I'm getting ready to move, and a bunch of my friends are begging me to sell it to them when I do for $800. Because even though thats the price I paid, its still worth way more than that. In the end, I'll have had a sweet TV for 2 years, and not have paid a cent for it in the end. 🙂
