I feel like writing or: How I got a iPhone 3GS 32GB for $60

No cliffs.

Over the past weekend, a person who works in an office on the other side of my cube (we will call him Bob) got very drunk at a Halloween party Saturday night, hopped onto the hood of a cab to keep a friend from leaving said party and had his iPhone fall to the ground which was consequently ran over by the cab. Bob bought a new phone the next day, and on Monday was talking (read: whining) about it to his office mate and another person that happen to pop in to ask a work related question. I overheard what had happened to the phone and that even thought the glass was completely shattered (though still held in place) the LCD was fine and you could still use the touch pad, minus a few glass splinters. So I googled “iPhone parts” and found www.gethightech.com who had the part listed for $49.99.

I walked into Bob’s office and asked if I could see the phone, he handed it to me and sure enough the phone still worked and just needed the glass digitizer replaced. I told him that if he still wanted to phone he could fix it for around $50; he rudely dismissed my suggestion and told me that there was no way it could be fixed for that much, I even tried to show him the site so he could see for himself but he would have none of it. Since he wasn’t taking my advice I decided to stop wasting my time and get back to work.

Later that day, the silence around my cube was broken by Bob once again ranting about his phone to his office mate, he mockingly quoted me on my advice for fixing the phone; obviously mistaking me for being absent from my cube. I stood up and looked over the wall of my cube at Bob, who after realizing I was not away from my desk turned to his monitor and awkwardly started navigating with his computer mouse in a vain attempt to not make eye contact. I asked him if he really did not believe me, he tried regaining his composure and with his trade mark smug confidence said that he indeed did not believe me.

I then purposed a wager with him that if I could prove the phone could be fixed for less than $60 he had to give me the phone, he said he would do it only if I could provide proof of the parts value; I told him not only would I do that but I would also fix the phone in front of him. We both agreed on the terms and I sat down back down at my desk, ordered the parts and printed out the invoice, walked into his office and told him I wanted all the information on the phone wiped, “I don’t want to see any pictures of your naked ass on my new phone.” I instructed. Bob, not caring about the phone since he already had a replacement, did just that and handed me the phone. A few days later the replacement screen came in and over lunch I let Bob and my coworker (who just wanted to watch me rip open a $500 phone) replace the broken digitizer, all together it took me around a half hour since I had never worked on an iPhone before and I decided to poke around the insides of the gadget since I had it open anyway.

Bob, if you’re reading this: There is a reason my boss (The IT manager for the company) comes to me when he has a question about hardware; I’m not an expert but I have great deal of experience and puzzle solve extremely well in that area.

I'm sure you're very good at your job since you've been with the company for so long, but your voice is so goddamn annoying that after almost a year of listening to it I can not put into words how happy I am you've finally moved down to hall so I can get work done without listening to you lecturing people about things you have no clue about.

P.s. The phone works great by the way.

are you gonna sell it now? jailbreak+unlock it first if you're going to

cool story bro

seriously, i've wanted to do this with a broken iphone, but they're still too expensive before the screen replacement

Yay cookie!

Nope, it worked out well for me since my BlackBerry pearl was giving up the ghost (Damn tough phone, took a three story fall and still worked!) but my contract with T-mobile isn't up until Feb.

I unlocked it a few days ago and just jail broke it moments ago, I'm going to use it until a version of Droid makes it's way to TM.

good read. ATOT is gonna get ruined by these jackasses posting stupid pictures in every friggin thread. hopefully the novelty will wear off soon

You spent 50 bucks?

the digitizer and glass replacement can be hand on ebay for a mere 25-26 bucks.

I recently repaired a 16 gig 3g. costed me 60 in total to replace the lcd, glass + digitizer and a battery.

these guys have a nice guide with pictures and all. I used it.

Used that as a quick reference, getting the glass off was fun since I had to ask my boss if I could use his space heater; I got the strangest look when I said it was for my phone.

I know I could have gotten it cheaper but to be honest I’ve seen far too many people get burned by getting the wrong part or get a very cheap knock off that works just well enough that it can be sold. I also hate using paypal for anything but online trades done here on AT.

Good story. However, I would've changed Bob's name to Boob after first mentioning him. Having bought an iPhone, I'm pretty jealous you got one for $60.

:thumbsup;

Are you a fucking chick? That story was full of useless details and page-filler bullshit.

That being said, congrats on the cheap iPhone grab.

So it is working fine? Did you make a call with it?

If I were Bob I would have made sure you can call out with it. You would have been an automatic loser since you can't get a plan for less than a gillion dollars.
