Ok, I just upgraded to a P4 and noticed something... what the heck is an ATX12V connector? Or what about AT-PWR as my new mobo calls another connector.. What are these for? Clearly my PSU doesn't have a cable for it, so must I buy an adapter for the 300w PSU I already have, or should I just go buy a new PSU? What would happen if I tried to boot without this ATX12V connected?

I don't think it'll hurt to boot without it. It gives extra juice to the cpu. Some people run fine without it, others have problems though. I'd probably get a P4 compliant power supply if money's not tight.

When I first saw it a thought hit me - this was the reason why so many people had cold boot problems with the VIA/AMD combo - cpu just was not getting enough juice. Intel sure figured that one out. The Asus P4S333 has an additional 4 pin molex connector which can take a regular connector in the event you do not have a P4 compatible PS. It works like a charm for me.

But dont forget the people with P4 that have warm boot problems. I think its the mb manufacturers are under poweing the cpu at default. When i bump my 1600a up to 1.65v sandra shows me actually having 1.53v. its supposed to have 1.5. Thats why the wire trick works so well for alot of people.

It just depends on the Mobo, Asus is known for running Vcore slightly higher than default. (ie. 1.5V setting in bios, actuall Vcore may be 1.55V) I know a lot of older Asus boards were that way. My P4B266 seems to run Vcore at exactly what it's set at though.
